JOB SUMMARY AND DESCRIPTION OF TASKS


Position: Instructional Aide - Life Skills


Reports to: Classroom Teacher and Building Principal


Basic Function: Assist certified staff to perform instructional and support tasks related to the students' educational development within the total school environment


Typical Work:


  • Carry out instructional activities assigned by the teacher
  • Assist students, individually and in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts
  • Collect and record instructional and behavioral data, predetermined by the teacher
  • Implement both individual and classroom wide behavior management plans (possibly to include restraint and/or exclusionary time-out), as stipulated by the teacher
  • Provide assistance to students with personal care, eating, dressing and toileting needs, including diaper changing, as necessary and determined by the teacher
  • Lift and maneuver children and/or equipment.
  • Provide support, assistance and modifications to students in inclusion settings, as defined by special and general education teachers
  • Provide instructional and supervisory assistance to teacher during community-based instruction
  • Assist students with the use of assistive devices including switches, computer software, and communication books/devices, as designated by the teacher and specific IEP requirements
  • Assist the teacher in obtaining, constructing and developing materials
  • Regular on-time attendance
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the teacher or principal


Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma
  • Experience working with children or adults who have special needs, preferred
  • Ability to work and interact with students with significant mental and physical disabilities
  • Ability to demonstrate patience while working with students
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Able and expected to attend work as scheduled
  • Able to model appropriate professional behavior
