Job description

Position: Extended Day Program Substitute Nurse
Position Type: Part-time
Department: Community Education
Location: Elementary Schools - Watertown Public Schools
Reports to: Director of Community Education
Affiliation: Non-Aligned
Schedule: Shifts are scheduled based on the needs of the program. There is no guarantee of shifts or hours. Shifts run from 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm on regular school days and 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm on early release days.
Pay Rate: $44.34 per hour
General Description:
Watertown Community Education is a self-sustaining department of the Watertown Public Schools that provides quality enrichment programs and courses for children, adults, and families.
The Extended Day Program provides a safe, nurturing environment after school for children in PreK through Grade 5 from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM daily. Activities are provided that challenge each child to explore, discover, create, and grow.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide nursing services to students in grades Pre-K through 5 during the Extended Day Program.
  • Communicate with families regarding student illnesses, symptoms, injuries, and care given.
  • Ensure student health plans, including but not limited to allergy plans, asthma action plans, seizure action plans, etc. are up-to-date for all students and followed during Extended Day Program hours as appropriate/applicable.
  • Ensure any emergency medications including but not limited to Epi-Pens, inhalers, and Diastat, are current, on-site, and accessible to program staff and administrators as needed.
  • Assist students with personal care tasks as needed which may include but are not limited to toileting, diapering, feeding, etc.
  • Maintain logs of care administered and complete other forms and documentation as required by the District.
  • Attend field trips as needed.
  • Flexibility to change school locations as needed throughout the year to ensure we have adequate nurse coverage where the greatest student need is.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Extended Day Program Extended Day Site Coordinator, and/or Assistant Director or Director of Community Education
Qualifications:
  • BSN or RN license
  • Experience as a school nurse preferred: preference will be given to candidates with pediatric expertise and experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with Type 1 Diabetes care, monitoring, and insulin management
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to move between multiple school sites as needed.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of medical supplies and equipment (up to 25 lbs).
  • Dexterity to perform medical procedures and operate standard nursing equipment.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Capacity to communicate clearly and effectively in high-pressure environments.
Professional Commitment
The Extended Day Substitute Nurse is expected to be available on and on-call, as needed basis to provide nurse coverage to the Cunniff, Lowell, and/or Hosmer Extended Day Programs.
Annual Professional Development Requirement:
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Monthly Community Education Meetings
