What is an Adobe Experience Manager Developer?

An Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Developer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining web applications and digital experiences using the Adobe Experience Manager platform. AEM Developers work with both the backend and frontend of websites, customizing components, templates, and workflows to meet business needs. They often collaborate with designers, content authors, and other developers to build scalable, secure, and user-friendly digital solutions. Their expertise includes Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and knowledge of Adobe’s suite of tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Adobe Experience Manager Developer?

To thrive as an Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Developer, you need expertise in Java programming, web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and a thorough understanding of AEM architecture, often supported by a relevant degree or AEM certifications. Familiarity with tools like Apache Sling, OSGi, CRX, Adobe Cloud Manager, and version control systems such as Git is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams help developers excel in delivering robust digital solutions. These skills are vital for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining scalable, high-quality web experiences that meet business goals.

What are some common challenges Adobe Experience Manager Developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Developers often encounter challenges like managing complex integrations with other enterprise systems, ensuring optimal site performance under high traffic, and handling frequent updates or customizations to meet evolving business needs. Collaboration with cross-functional teams such as UX designers, content authors, and backend developers is essential to ensure seamless content delivery and user experience. Staying updated with the latest AEM features and best practices can also be demanding but is crucial for delivering scalable and maintainable solutions.

Job description

Position Summary

The Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Engineer is a hands-on technical role responsible for solution design, development, delivery, and support of MVW’s customer-facing and associate-facing content management systems (CMS) for branded websites and mobile applications. This position contributes specialized IT knowledge and provides guidance on overall application expertise, experience, and design that supports the MVW enterprise.

The Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Engineer provides technical leadership, supports platform governance, and engineering enablement for MVW’s AEM as a Cloud Service implementation. This role serves as the primary internal subject matter expert for AEM architecture, onboarding, and vendor alignment—leading the implementation, operation, and evolution of AEM alignment with MVW’s digital experience strategy and Adobe cloud service best practices.

This role is accountable for supplier performance and outcomes for partners engaged by MVW to support web and mobile application development and application maintenance.  This role works closely with platform owners, product owners, key stakeholders, and leaders to define the application strategy and delivery approach. The role partners with enterprise architects to align technology solutions, with platform owners to align business strategy across business units, and with delivery engineers and vendors to implement the solutions.

Expected Contributions

AEM Platform Ownership & Governance

  • Serve as the technical leader of the AEM Cloud Service environment, including Development, Publish, and Cloud Manager configurations.

  • Support platform governance decisions, including multi-tenant structure, brand separation, folder hierarchies, and deployment constraints.

  • Act as the escalation point for AEM platform questions across engineering, DevOps, vendors, and Adobe.

Architecture & Solution Design

  • Enhance and maintain the AEM platform supporting marketing sites, brand separation, headless delivery, and integration patterns.

  • Manage, review, and validate MVW best practices for AEM implementations.

  • Manage, review, and validate partner‑provided designs and implementation approaches for consistency with MVW standards.

DevOps, CI/CD & Release Management

  • Support the AEM CI/CD strategy, working with DevOps teams and partners to define deployment pipelines, branching strategies, and release governance.

  • Coordinate Cloud Manager pipeline usage across multiple brands and sites.

  • Ensure releases align with MVW security, stability, and operational readiness expectations.

Vendor, Partner & Adobe Engagement

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact with Adobe for:

    • Platform onboarding

    • Expert Sessions

    • Ultimate Success / Success Accelerator engagements

  • Partner with system integrators on implementation planning, technical reviews, and issue resolution.

Access Management & Environment Readiness

  • Manage AEM Admin and Support role assignments, ensuring teams have appropriate access for development and support ticketing.

  • Coordinate sandbox, non-production, and production readiness to avoid delivery blockers.

Enablement & Knowledge Transfer

  • Manage internal AEM capability build‑out, including:

    • Technical onboarding

    • Best practice alignment

    • Knowledge transfer from vendors and Adobe

  • Identify skill gaps and coordinate enablement sessions rather than relying on indefinite vendor dependency

General

  • Subject matter expert for platform/capability; works with supplier and other experts to stay ahead of technology trends related to the platform

  • Manages application and platform innovation

  • Manages delivery partners to produce application development outcomes in alignment with solution designs

Candidate Profile

Education

  • College degree: technology based, engineering, computer science, or statistical/math sciences or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree

Experience

  • Significant experience developing customer facing web and mobile applications

  • Requires at least 7 years of progressive experience with CMS systems, with a focus on Adobe AEM.

  • Requires at least 7 years of progressive experience with web (Java, REST APIs, CSS, and HTML) and mobile development technologies

  • Hands-on experience in Agile methodology

  • Progressive experience with integrations to backend services, analytics, CMS solutions, and security best practices.

  • Applied understanding of User Experience Architecture, User-Centered Design Analysis and application design.

  • Experience with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for web and mobile applications

  • Experience with DevOps best practices and release automation

  • Experience in a multi-channel environment (web, mobile, agent, automated phone, etc.)

  • Able to exhibit a progression of increasingly complex platforms/applications and successfully deliver complex IT projects

Skills/Attributes

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Web and Mobile application development and testing practices
