Job Description This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 (Laboratory Supervisor) located in Anchorage, Alaska.
What You Will Be Doing: This position serves as the Laboratory Supervisor for the ADF&G Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL), overseeing and coordinating laboratory work for genetic projects statewide. The Laboratory Supervisor's responsibilities include designing, tracking, and troubleshooting lab workflows; designing and implementing quality control measures; uploading data and querying the lab's database; supervising several technicians and biologists conducting genetic lab work; and working with project leaders to meet project objectives and timelines. This position may also conduct genetic lab work and associated quality control analyses, perform basic statistical analyses on genetic data, and create written summaries of lab methods and results for protocols, reports, and other publications.

This is a dynamic position, with constantly changing priorities and competing deadlines. Work will be performed in the lab, at a computer, and through daily interactions with GCL staff and occasional interaction with other ADF&G staff and outside collaborators
Occasional weekend work or non-standard working hours may be required. Some travel is expected to conduct occasional field work necessary for sample collection. Who We Are Looking For: We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies: Knowledge and experience working in a professional laboratory with established protocols and quality control measures.
Experience with supervising multiple staff, including training, assigning tasks, reviewing work products, coaching performance, and writing evaluations. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities, as well as coordinate and manage multiple ongoing projects. Experience managing laboratory supply inventories, ordering, and interacting with vendors.
Knowledge and experience using the Microsoft 365/Office Suite, Quartzy, R/RStudio, Linux/Unix, genetic analysis software, and a LIMS (lab information management system) database. Knowledge and experience using lab equipment, such as manual and electronic pipettes, centrifuges, liquid-handling robots, thermocyclers, and DNA visualization, genotyping, and sequencing instrumentation. This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition. First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management; AND One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Fish Culturist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer. Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field: at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note: "Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
