What is additive manufacturing?
Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of creating products by adding material using one or more techniques. This is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing, which produces products by removing material. Many products are produced using a combination of these two techniques. To manufacture a plastic shape, you may use additive manufacturing to layer plastic materials then use subtractive manufacturing to cut and shape the plastic. In recent years, AM has started to focus on advanced techniques like 3D printing, where complex products are created layer by layer, using one or more materials. The main job in AM is that of an additive manufacturing engineer, although rapid prototyping may utilize this process to create a small model of a potential product.
What is additive manufacturing?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in additive manufacturing, and why are they important?
What are some typical challenges faced in an additive manufacturing role, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Additive Manufacturing vs CNC Machinist?
| Aspect | Additive Manufacturing | CNC Machinist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires technical training or certification in 3D printing technologies | Requires machining certifications or technical training in CNC operations |
| Work Environment | Works in labs or manufacturing facilities with 3D printers and related equipment | Works in machine shops or manufacturing plants operating CNC machines |
| Industry Usage | Used in prototyping, custom parts, and complex geometries | Used for precision manufacturing of metal and plastic parts |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Often compared for manufacturing processes involving digital fabrication | Compared for traditional subtractive manufacturing skills |
While both roles are involved in manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing focuses on building parts layer-by-layer using 3D printing technologies, whereas CNC Machinists operate subtractive machines to carve parts from raw materials. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within the manufacturing industry.

Job description
Stratasys is leading the global shift to additive manufacturing with innovative 3D printing solutions for industries such as aerospace, automotive, consumer products and healthcare. Through smart and connected 3D printers, polymer materials, a software ecosystem, and parts on demand, Stratasys solutions deliver competitive advantages at every stage in the product value chain. The world's leading organizations turn to Stratasys to transform product design, bring agility to manufacturing and supply chains, and improve patient care.
Stratasys Direct Manufacturing (SDM) is seeking a Production Scheduling Manager to lead the development and execution of production schedules that optimize customer delivery, manufacturing performance, and resource utilization. This role will drive the enterprise scheduling strategy, oversee scheduling systems across multiple facilities, and lead the implementation and continuous improvement of advanced scheduling software.
Working cross-functionally with Fulfillment, Operations, Engineering, IT, and external software partners, the Production Scheduling Manager will improve lead times, increase schedule reliability, streamline communication, and ensure seamless integration between scheduling platforms and manufacturing systems. This position plays a key role in advancing SDM's production scheduling capabilities and supporting operational excellence across the organization.
What you will be doing:
- Own and maintain the master production schedule (MPS), balancing customer demand, capacity, labor, material availability, and delivery commitments
- Develop and execute finite-capacity production schedules that optimize throughput, resource utilization, and on-time delivery performance
- Monitor schedule adherence, identify production risks, and drive resolution of disruptions impacting customer commitments
- Establish production priorities and scheduling strategies aligned with business objectives and operational constraints
- Analyze production flow, scheduling performance, and operational constraints to identify and eliminate bottlenecks driving lead-time variability
- Develop and maintain key performance metrics related to schedule attainment, throughput, WIP, utilization, and delivery performance
- Partner with Operations and Engineering to improve capacity planning, workflow efficiency, and manufacturing predictability
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives that reduce lead times, improve responsiveness, and enhance operational performance
- Serve as the business owner and subject matter expert for enterprise scheduling systems, leading implementation, adoption, and continuous improvement across all manufacturing sites
- Act as the primary liaison between manufacturing operations, software development partners, and equipment providers to ensure scheduling solutions meet business and operational requirements
- Define scheduling workflows, business rules, integration requirements, and best practices that support scalable enterprise deployment
- Partner directly with software vendors to provide operational feedback, guide product enhancements, participate in pilot programs, and influence future roadmap development
- Collaborate with Stratasys and internal stakeholders to improve connectivity between scheduling platforms, machine controls, ERP, MES, and manufacturing data systems
- Develop short- and long-range capacity plans that support customer demand, operational objectives, and business growth
- Analyze forecasted demand, identify resource constraints, and recommend actions to address capacity gaps
- Provide data-driven recommendations regarding labor, equipment, and capital investments required to support future production requirements
- Support customer commitment decisions through schedule feasibility analysis and production planning expertise
- Lead coordination between Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Information Technology, and site leadership teams
- Align production planning activities with strategic business objectives and customer delivery requirements
- Communicate scheduling performance, operational risks, and improvement opportunities to leadership teams
- Drive standardization of scheduling processes, planning methodologies, and operational best practices across the enterprise
Must have for this role:
- Bachelor's degree in Operations Management, Business, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or a related technical field, OR 5+ years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree
- Experience developing and managing Master Production Schedules (MPS) in a manufacturing environment
- Experience using ERP/MRP systems for production planning
- Demonstrated success improving schedule attainment, on-time delivery, lead times, or manufacturing throughput
- Experience collaborating across Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and Leadership
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience using production data to drive operational decisions
Nice to have:
- Experience implementing or deploying scheduling software
- Experience participating in ERP, MES, APS, or digital manufacturing software implementations
- Experience serving as a business owner or product owner for manufacturing software
- Additive Manufacturing Experience and experience working in regulated industries such as aerospace, medical, or defense
- Continuous Improvement: Lean Manufacturing experience, Value Stream Mapping, Capacity planning, Statistical process improvement
- Data & Analytics - With SQL, Power BI, Advanced Excel (Power Query, Power Pivot) Python or other analytics tools (nice to have)
- APICS/ASCM Certification in Planning and Inventory Management (CPIM) or related certification
