What does an additive manufacturing engineering intern do?

An Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern assists engineering teams by supporting the design, development, and testing of 3D-printed parts and products. Their responsibilities often include preparing CAD models, operating and maintaining 3D printers, conducting material and quality tests, and documenting results. Interns gain hands-on experience with additive manufacturing technologies, such as FDM, SLA, or SLS, while learning about prototyping, design optimization, and production processes. They work closely with experienced engineers to solve real-world manufacturing challenges and contribute to innovative projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an additive manufacturing engineering intern?

To thrive as an Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you need foundational knowledge in engineering principles, 3D modeling, and materials science, typically gained through coursework in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), 3D printing machines, and relevant safety protocols is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help interns excel in collaborative and innovative environments. These competencies are crucial for successfully supporting additive manufacturing projects, ensuring quality, and driving innovation in production processes.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an additive manufacturing engineering intern?

As an Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you can expect to work on hands-on projects such as designing and prototyping parts using 3D printing technologies, performing quality checks, and assisting with machine setup and maintenance. You'll likely collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and production teams to troubleshoot print issues, optimize part designs for manufacturability, and document process improvements. This role provides valuable exposure to the entire additive manufacturing workflow and offers opportunities to contribute ideas in a rapidly evolving field.

What is the difference between Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern vs Mechanical Engineering Intern?

AspectAdditive Manufacturing Engineering InternMechanical Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsEnrolled in engineering or related degree, familiarity with CAD and 3D printingEnrolled in mechanical engineering or related degree, strong CAD skills
Work EnvironmentManufacturing labs, 3D printing facilities, R&D departmentsDesign labs, manufacturing plants, research centers
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, 3D printing companiesAutomotive, aerospace, industrial design firms

The Additive Manufacturing Engineering Intern role focuses on 3D printing and additive processes, requiring knowledge of specific manufacturing techniques. In contrast, the Mechanical Engineering Intern has a broader scope, covering various mechanical design and analysis tasks. Both roles are valuable entry points in engineering, but they differ in specialization and work environment.
