Description
POSITION : Assistant Director of Alternative Programming at HOPE, Office of Student Support Services
REPORTS TO : Executive Director of Student Support Services or Designee
POSITION SUMMARY : The Assistant Director of Alternative Programming at HOPE manages the daily functions of the Student Support Services and Success Centers, working collaboratively with the educators at HOPE to develop an infrastructure to support the needs of both the general education and special education students. While building capacity with school staff and securing and maintaining community partnerships to support student needs, the Assistant Director will plan and implement services within the framework of the master school schedule.
The goal of the Assistant Director of Alternative Programming at HOPE is to ultimately improve students' school experience and to ensure all students are on track for postsecondary success. The Assistant Director will also coordinate programmatic elements of the alternative program offerings across Hartford Public Schools and other alternative programming. Equitable practices and a Restorative Justice approach are required to implement relevant service offerings.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
Program Leadership & Oversight
  • Provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of HOPE Academy, Student Support and Success Centers, and assigned alternative education and personalized pathway programs
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates program structures, procedures, services, and interventions aligned with district priorities and student needs
  • Collaborates with district and school leadership to identify program gaps, strengthen service delivery, and ensure consistent implementation across programs

Student Success & Graduation
  • Develops and monitors strategies to improve student attendance, engagement, credit attainment, graduation, and postsecondary readiness
  • Coordinates targeted interventions for students who are chronically absent, disengaged, credit deficient, or otherwise at risk of not graduating
  • Supports appropriate student placement, transition, re-engagement, and individualized pathways toward graduation

Data, Accountability & Continuous Improvement
  • Analyzes academic, attendance, behavioral, graduation, and program data to evaluate student outcomes and program effectiveness
  • Establishes performance measures and progress-monitoring systems and provides recommendations for program improvement
  • Leads data-informed continuous improvement efforts across assigned programs

Staff Leadership & Professional Learning
  • Supervises, evaluates, coaches, and supports assigned staff to ensure effective program implementation and accountability
  • Identifies professional learning needs and facilitates training for administrators, teachers, support staff, and other stakeholders
  • Promotes collaborative practices and shared accountability for student outcomes

Student Support & Equity
  • Coordinates academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and re-engagement support for students participating in alternative programming
  • Supports equitable, restorative, trauma-informed, and PBIS practices that promote student belonging and successful school engagement
  • Collaborates with general education, special education, multilingual learner, counseling, and student support teams to ensure equitable access to services

Family & Community Partnerships
  • Develops partnerships with families, community organizations, colleges, universities, governmental agencies, and service providers to expand student opportunities and support
  • Coordinates family engagement, community referrals, internships, and other external resources that advance student success
  • Identifies grant and partnership opportunities that support alternative education, graduation, career development, and postsecondary initiatives

Compliance & District Collaboration
  • Ensures assigned programs operate in accordance with district policies, CSDE requirements, and applicable state and federal requirements
  • Maintains appropriate program documentation, reporting, and accountability systems.
  • Advises district leadership regarding student needs, program performance, resource needs, and opportunities for improvement
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • Master's degree in education and a minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience
  • Understanding of student-centered learning
  • Experience gathering data and monitoring progress toward learning goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in an educational setting
  • Experience working with culturally, socially, and economically diverse student and family populations
  • Experience with staff supervision and evaluations
  • Bilingual, preferred
  • Ability to work with multiple external partners
  • Outstanding organizational and communication skills
  • Understanding of adult learning and experience providing effective professional learning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices related to the integration of technology, curriculum implementation, and creating positive classroom environments

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : Connecticut Intermediate Administrative Certification (092) is required.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : This is a twelve-month position, and the salary is in accordance with the Hartford Principals' and Supervisors' Association 2026-2027 Schedule: Group 11: $137,101 - $146,249.
