What is an ACL injury?

An ACL injury refers to a sprain or tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a major ligament in your knee that helps stabilize the joint. ACL injuries are common among athletes who play sports that involve sudden stops, jumps, or changes in direction, such as soccer, basketball, and football. Symptoms often include a popping sound at the time of injury, pain, swelling, and instability in the knee. Treatment can range from rest and physical therapy to surgical reconstruction, depending on the severity of the injury and the individual’s activity level.

What are the typical responsibilities of a physical therapist specializing in ACL injury rehabilitation?

Physical therapists working with ACL injury patients are responsible for designing and implementing individualized rehabilitation programs that focus on restoring strength, flexibility, and stability to the knee. They regularly assess patient progress, educate clients on safe movement techniques, and collaborate with orthopedic surgeons and athletic trainers to ensure comprehensive care. Additionally, these therapists motivate patients through each phase of recovery and adjust treatment plans based on healing progress and specific activity goals.
