Children’s Friend is seeking an Accounting Manager to lead core accounting operations while supporting the financial stewardship that sustains services for Rhode Island’s most vulnerable young children and families. Based on your Organization Context, this role contributes directly to a mission centered on nurturing children and empowering families by ensuring strong financial controls, reliable reporting, and administrative discipline across the organization.
This role is well suited for an experienced accounting professional who brings both technical depth and team leadership. The Accounting Manager will oversee essential accounting processes, guide and develop Staff Accountants, and partner across the organization to support compliance, reporting accuracy, and sound financial operations in a mission-driven environment.
???? What You’ll Do:
Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, revenue and expense recording, and month-end close
Supervise, coach, and support Staff Accountants through ongoing feedback, performance management, and professional development
Strengthen team capability through onboarding support, cross-training, and clear workflow expectations
Prepare, review, and maintain accurate financial statements, management reports, schedules, and supporting documentation in accordance with internal standards and external requirements
Review balance sheet reconciliations, investigate variances, and follow issues through to resolution
Maintain strong internal controls, accounting procedures, and documentation practices that support compliance, audit readiness, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources
Monitor compliance with grants, contracts, donor restrictions, and other regulatory or funding requirements
Coordinate annual audits and support external reviews by organizing records, responding to requests, and maintaining complete documentation
Partner with program, HR, and operational teams to gather financial information, support coding accuracy, resolve discrepancies, and provide financial guidance
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen consistency, and increase administrative efficiency in alignment with Organization Context priorities
Required Skills & Abilities
Strong ability to lead accounting work within structured financial processes while maintaining accuracy across detailed tasks
Experience guiding, developing, and supporting accounting staff through clear expectations and ongoing coaching
Comfort managing multiple deadlines and adjusting priorities as business needs shift
Sound judgment in reviewing financial information, identifying discrepancies, and following issues through to resolution
Ability to create and maintain clear documentation, reconciliations, and audit-ready records
Effective written and verbal communication skills for working with finance colleagues and cross-functional partners
Working knowledge of accounting systems, spreadsheets, and standard financial reporting practices
Commitment to stewardship, accountability, and dependable follow-through in support of mission-driven operations
???? What You Bring:Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 10+ years of accounting experience
- 5+ years of supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Experience working in nonprofit, governmental, or grant-funded environments
- Proven ability to develop, motivate, and lead accounting professionals
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or CMA designation
- Experience with federal grants and Uniform Guidance
- Experience using nonprofit accounting software such as NetSuite, MIP, Financial Edge, Sage, or Intacct
Work Environment
On-site presence will be required.This is a hybrid position requiring both remote and onsite work. Flexibility to work extended hours during peak periods, including audits, budgeting cycles, year-end close, and program reviews, is expected.
