Accounting Manager

A growing business unit of a larger publicly traded organization is seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to oversee its accounting and financial reporting activities. The operation has experienced significant growth in volume and complexity, creating an opportunity for someone who can bring greater structure, accountability, and consistency to the accounting function.

This position will have broad ownership of the business unit's accounting activities and will work closely with both corporate accounting and operational leadership. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an evolving environment, identifying gaps, strengthening processes and controls, and taking the initiative to drive improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process for the business unit, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and other supporting schedules.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the general ledger and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
  • Partner with corporate accounting teams to validate accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other transactional activity processed centrally.
  • Ensure revenue is recognized appropriately and accounting transactions are recorded in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Review financial results, investigate variances, and communicate findings to finance and operational leadership.
  • Support and strengthen SOX compliance, including key controls, documentation, testing, and remediation of identified issues.
  • Partner with operational management to reinforce accounting policies, internal controls, and SOX requirements.
  • Evaluate existing accounting processes and implement improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Develop greater structure around operational and financial workflows to support continued growth.
  • Work closely with operations to understand underlying business activity and ensure transactions are captured and accounted for appropriately.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requirements and ensure requested information is provided accurately and timely.
  • Identify accounting or control issues proactively and drive them through resolution.
  • Serve as a strong accounting partner to operational leadership while maintaining appropriate financial controls and accountability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Strong progressive accounting experience with responsibility for month-end close, general ledger accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working within a SOX-compliant environment or meaningful exposure to SOX controls and requirements.
  • Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP and general accounting principles.
  • Experience in a capital-intensive, operational, manufacturing, distribution, services, or similarly complex business environment is preferred.
  • Ability to understand operational workflows and translate business activity into appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Strong process-improvement mindset with the ability to identify gaps and implement practical solutions.
  • Comfortable working in an environment undergoing growth, change, and process development.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to work directly with operational and senior management.
  • Ability to take ownership, work independently, and drive initiatives to completion.
