Job description

Accounting Manager (Hands-On) – Winder, GA

Overview

A growing, private equity-backed construction services company is seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to take full ownership of the accounting and financial operations. This is a high-impact role for someone who wants more than just maintaining the books — this person will bring structure, improve processes, and help build a more disciplined financial operation as the company scales.

This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a lean environment, being close to the business, and partnering directly with leadership on both financial and operational decisions.

What You'll Own

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Own the full accounting cycle, including general ledger, reconciliations, and the close process.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Build and manage the annual budget in partnership with leadership.
  • Deliver clear, actionable financial reporting (P&L, balance sheet, job profitability, KPIs).
  • Partner with external CPA on tax filings and financial reviews.
  • Track and analyze job-level profitability, including labor, materials, and margins.

AR, AP & Cash Management

  • Manage billing, collections, and accounts receivable with clear follow-through.
  • Oversee accounts payable, vendor payments, and expense management.
  • Maintain visibility into cash position, receivables, and payables timing.
  • Ensure vendor compliance documentation (W-9s, COIs, subcontractor records) is current.

Payroll, Compliance & Administration

  • Process weekly payroll and maintain employee/subcontractor records.
  • Administer benefits, workers' comp, and insurance programs.
  • Manage licenses, permits, and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as point of contact for insurance carriers and audits.

Operations & Business Partnership

  • Partner with leadership on job costing, margin analysis, and forecasting.
  • Build reporting that is actually used to run the business.
  • Align financial data with operational systems to ensure accuracy and visibility.
  • Support leadership with KPIs, dashboards, and decision-making insights.

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Identify gaps and build better financial processes and controls.
  • Improve how financial data is captured, reported, and used.
  • Leverage tools like QuickBooks Online, Excel, and reporting systems effectively.
  • Support system alignment between operational and financial data.

What Success Looks Like

  • Brings structure and clarity to financial operations
  • Improves accuracy, visibility, and timeliness of reporting
  • Creates systems that scale with the business
  • Acts as a true partner to leadership, not just a back-office function

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, ideally in a small business or multi-entity environment
  • Strong experience managing full-cycle accounting independently
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online
  • Strong skills in Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • Comfortable working in a lean, hands-on environment with broad responsibilities
  • Tech-savvy with the ability to improve and adapt systems

Key Traits

  • Detail-oriented: Gets it right the first time
  • Ownership mindset: Fixes issues instead of working around them
  • Organized and adaptable: Can manage complexity without losing control
  • Proactive: Steps in without being asked
  • Team-oriented: Thrives in an all-hands-on-deck environment

Culture & Values

  • Make it Right: Accuracy and accountability matter
  • Integrity: Follow through on commitments
  • All Hands on Deck: Everyone contributes — no task is too small
