What is an accounting controller accountant?

An Accounting Controller Accountant is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of an organization. Their duties typically include managing financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, supervising accounting staff, preparing budgets, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Controllers play a critical role in the financial management and strategic planning of a business, acting as a bridge between the accounting team and executive management. They often help establish accounting policies and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial statements.

What are some common challenges an accounting controller accountant faces when managing month-end closing processes?

Accounting Controller Accountants often face tight deadlines and high expectations during month-end closing, as they must ensure all financial data is accurate and complete before reporting. Challenges include coordinating with various departments to gather required information, addressing discrepancies quickly, and implementing process improvements to reduce errors. Strong organizational skills and proactive communication are essential to managing these pressures and maintaining compliance with accounting standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accounting controller accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting Controller Accountant, you need expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and a CPA certification. Proficiency with accounting software like QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel skills, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective leadership are crucial soft skills for managing teams and ensuring accuracy. These competencies are essential for maintaining financial integrity, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring compliance within an organization.

What is the difference between Accounting Controller Accountant vs Bookkeeper?

AspectAccounting Controller AccountantBookkeeper

Job description

Our client is a highly respected investment platform with a sophisticated, growing finance and accounting team in Chicago, ILI. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced fund accounting professional who wants to join a stable, high-performing organization with excellent leadership, strong benefits, meaningful flexibility, and a clear runway for continued career growth.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technical accounting, fund operations, investor reporting, process improvement, and leadership exposure.

The company has an impressive track record of growth, low turnover, and a collaborative culture where employees are supported, challenged, and given the opportunity to build long-term careers. The team values excellence, but also understands the importance of balance, flexibility, and a sustainable work environment.

The position offers a hybrid schedule with three days in the office and 2 days remote. It is a great fit for someone who wants the energy and collaboration of an in-office team without giving up work-life balance.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

This is not a narrow accounting seat. This person will own meaningful fund accounting and reporting responsibilities, work closely with senior leadership, interact with key internal teams, and help support new fund launches, investor reporting, audits, capital activity, and process improvements.

There is also strong upward mobility. For the right person, this role can grow into broader leadership responsibilities and may offer a path toward Controller-level opportunities over time. The company is known for investing in its people, promoting from within, and creating long-term career paths for high performers.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the accounting and reporting process for multiple private investment funds and related vehicles
  • Oversee monthly and quarterly close activities, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, management fees, incentive fees, and fund-level expenses
  • Review financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, capital account activity, and monthly reporting packages
  • Ensure accounting and reporting are completed accurately and in accordance with GAAP, fund agreements, and internal policies
  • Support new fund launches, including reviewing fund documents, building close processes, and partnering with internal technology teams on system needs
  • Work with investor relations and internal teams to support quarterly investor statements, reporting deliverables, and investor requests
  • Manage relationships with third-party administrators and review NAV production for assigned entities
  • Support capital calls, distributions, and related analysis in partnership with Treasury, Investor Relations, and senior leadership
  • Provide meaningful reporting and analysis to leadership to support decision-making
  • Assist with annual audits, financial statement preparation, and external auditor requests
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve controls, and create greater efficiency across the fund accounting function
  • Collaborate closely with accounting, tax, treasury, operations, investor communications, compliance, valuation, and technology teams
  • Participate in special projects and new initiatives as the business continues to grow

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • CPA strongly preferred or encouraged
  • 8+ years of accounting experience, ideally within financial services, private equity, private credit, asset management, hedge funds, or a related investment environment
  • Strong fund accounting, partnership accounting, or investment accounting experience
  • Public accounting plus industry experience is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting

What the Company Offers

  • Hybrid schedule with three days in the Chicago office
  • Strong work-life balance and flexibility
  • Excellent benefits package, including medical, financial, retirement, and paid time off benefits
  • Stable, highly regarded company with low turnover
  • Talented leadership team and strong mentorship
  • Exposure to senior management and strategic business initiatives
  • Opportunity to support sophisticated funds and complex investment vehicles
  • Collaborative culture with smart, driven, down-to-earth professionals
  • Strong long-term career growth and upward mobility
  • Potential path toward Controller-level responsibilities over time
