Job Summary
At Luddy Indianapolis, undergraduate academic advisors provide academic advising to students and prospective students on all Luddy Indianapolis undergraduate programs. This role advises on admissions, academic requirements, plans of study, curriculum requirements, academic standing, rights and responsibilities, probation and dismissal, career planning, graduation eligibility, and other related topics. Advisors conduct orientation for new and transfer students, serve on committees, and represent the Luddy School to the IU Indianapolis community.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Supports recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • Participates on instructional team for learning communities.
  • Reviews student files for coursework, referrals, and other special programming.
  • Meets with prospective college students and currently enrolled students for a plan of study.
  • Addresses inquiries and solves problems; assists students with academic problems.
  • Audits and grants curriculum exemptions, substitutions, and exceptions.
  • Regularly reviews student academic records.
  • Conducts workshops for orientation procedures and other purposes.
  • Collects feedback from students on the assessment of courses, curricula, and programs and makes suggestions for improvement to the faculty.
  • Participates in recruitment events for high school and transfer students.
  • Participates on instructional team for Learning Communities/Summer Bridge and with special groups of students that require specific advising as requested. Teaches up to 3 credit hours per academic year of First Year Experience (or equivalent) course.
  • Works with faculty, student tutors and campus services to provide support to at-risk students.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides academic counseling for students pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates. Guides students in planning their course of study in concert with the departments' curricular requirements. Explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with students in groups and 1-on-1 to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists students in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction. Helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies. Empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans. Provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as an IU student and in the IU community.
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions, and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Represents the advising function as a presenter at campus meetings and recruiting functions. Assists in developing written advising materials for use in student events.
  • Researches, recommends, or creates best practices for unit or campus initiatives, projects, processes, or programs and may provide guidance to other Academic Advisors.
Qualifications

EDUCATION
Required
  • Master's degree in a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field. Experience in a student-focused, higher education environment is highly desired.

  • 3 years in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field.

$43,888.00 - 57,628.00 annually.
