Department of English | College of Arts & Sciences
Responsibilities
The Senior Academic Program Specialist serves as the primary contact person and liaison for prospective, current, and former undergraduate students in the English Department. This includes advising undergraduate students and providing academic support for the English Department. Supervises the Academic Support Assistant and oversees course scheduling of all courses except ENC1101 and ENC2135 for the department.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Serving as the primary academic advisor for undergraduate students; providing academic counseling for students who are, or who intend to become, English majors.
- Serving as the liaison to the College of Arts and Sciences for all undergraduate matters, as well as representing the department on committees and college or university projects as needed.
- Tracking student progress through the major; including mapping milestones, initiating and removing registration holds on students who are out of compliance with departmental or University policies, processing drop/add paperwork, reviewing transcripts for academic progress, and completing progress checks and graduation clearances for majors in the English track.
- Supervising Academic Support Assistant for the English department, being responsible for the hiring, training, and completion of performance evaluations.
- Working with the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies (ACUGS) to train, orient, and serve as Team Lead over the Advising First advisors serving in the English Department.
- Evaluating transcripts of all incoming students to determine course equivalencies for transfer credit.
- Coordinating and conducting orientation sessions for new and prospective students.
- Evaluating English Honors in the Major Program applications and working with the ACUGS on Honors in the Major admissions, tracking, and recruitment of eligible students.
- Working with the ACUGS and Business Manager to recommend, establish, and revise policies and procedures for the effective operations of the Undergraduate Advising Office and oversee the daily operations of the office in the absence of the ACUGS and Business Manager.
- Working with ACUGS to collect and analyze data on the operation of the undergraduate program and in developing proposals for programmatic changes to build upon and improve the academic learning outcomes of the majors.
- Participating in the curriculum development and implementation by advising departmental leadership including Associate Chairs, program directors, and committees about student needs, enrollment demands and problems with majors and course offerings.
Actively working with other units around the University to promote and advertise the English major.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and four years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to eight years.)
Preferred Qualifications
The English Department is seeking an individual who communicates effectively, is detailed-oriented, enjoys problem-solving, and can organize tasks and meet deadlines. The individual should also adapt easily to change and the needs of multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience include:
- Possesses strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and adhere to stringent deadlines.
- Experience researching and assessing data for accuracy in addition to identifying and taking corrective actions, if needed.
- Experience interpreting and applying policies, procedures, laws, rules & regulations.
- Ability to train and supervise employees.
- Ability to interpret academic program requirements and provide advice.
- Knowledge of admissions, registration, and graduation requirements, as well as resources available to students.
- Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of academic program planning, development, and evaluation, as well as that of management and career counseling/development.
