What is an ABS Surveyor?
An ABS Surveyor is a professional responsible for inspecting and certifying ships, offshore structures, and marine equipment to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards set by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). They conduct surveys at various stages of a vessel's life, including construction, maintenance, and repair. Their role helps maintain structural integrity, operational safety, and regulatory compliance within the maritime industry.
What skills and qualifications are needed to be an ABS Surveyor?
To thrive as an ABS Surveyor, you need a background in marine engineering or naval architecture, detailed knowledge of vessel construction, and a thorough understanding of classification society standards, particularly those of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Proficiency in inspection tools, digital reporting systems, and possession of relevant certifications from ABS or equivalent maritime organizations are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in collaborating with shipowners and shipyard teams. These competencies ensure the safety, compliance, and reliability of vessels inspected under rigorous regulatory standards.
What types of vessels or marine structures does an ABS Surveyor inspect, and what does a typical inspection involve?
ABS Surveyors are commonly responsible for inspecting a wide range of vessels—including commercial ships, offshore structures, and various maritime equipment—to ensure compliance with ABS classification rules and international regulations. Typical inspections can include reviewing hull integrity, assessing safety systems, checking machinery and equipment, and verifying proper maintenance documentation. The work often takes place in shipyards, at docks, or onboard vessels, both during construction and throughout a ship's operational life. As an ABS Surveyor, you will work closely with shipowners, operators, and engineering teams to address any deficiencies and ensure safe operation. This dynamic role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to maritime safety while gaining exposure to advanced technologies and industry best practices.

Job description
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. At Blue Origin, we are building the road to space - and that road runs through the ocean. The best-kept secret in space exploration is the critical role of marine assets and the use of one of Earth's most abundant resources - its oceans. The maritime industry has been integral to the exploration of space since its earliest days, with marine crews recovering flight hardware and astronauts since the dawn of human spaceflight. As the commercial space industry accelerates toward reusability to lower the cost of access to space, the importance of purpose-built marine vessels - and the teams who deliver and operate them - has never been greater.
At Blue Origin, we are assembling a world-class team that pushes the boundaries of vessel development and delivers the simplest, most robust solutions to some of humanity's most complex operational challenges. We are currently executing the new construction of a marine vessel specifically designed to support the at-sea recovery of orbital-class rocket boosters, and we need a team of four Project Construction Managers who will be the boots on the ground at the shipyard - driving daily construction execution from steel cutting through sea trials and delivery.
As a Project Construction Manager, you will be one of four construction managers embedded at the shipyard during the approximately 20-month vessel construction program. Working under the technical direction of the Technical Lead (Analyst / Naval Architect) and alongside the Senior Marine Electrical Engineer, you will manage day-to-day construction activities, monitor shipyard contractor performance, track schedule milestones, coordinate inspections, and ensure build quality meets Blue Origin's standards and classification requirements. You will serve as one of Blue Origin's primary on-site interfaces with shipyard personnel, subcontractors, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). You will coordinate closely with your fellow Project Construction Managers to ensure complete coverage of construction activities across all disciplines and phases of the build. As construction progresses toward outfitting and commissioning, you will also coordinate with the Recovery Offshore Operations Engineer to support recovery system installation timelines.
If you have the ambition, drive, and determination to roll up your sleeves in a shipyard and help build a vessel that will change the world, this is the role for you. We are looking for motivated professionals eager to apply their technical knowledge, hands-on shipyard experience, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Travel:
- Ability to relocate to Cape Canaveral, Florida
- 50-70% job-related travel, including extended periods at shipyard locations
- International travel required
Responsibilities:
- Execute day-to-day construction management activities at the shipyard under the technical direction of the Technical Lead (Analyst / Naval Architect)
- Monitor shipyard contractor performance for quality, schedule adherence, and compliance with specifications
- Track construction milestones, identify schedule risks, and escalate issues with proposed mitigation plans to the Technical Lead
- Prepare and submit regular construction progress reports to the Technical Lead and senior management
- Support subcontract activities including requests for proposal, specification development, and statement of work execution
- Coordinate with ABS surveyors and USCG OCMIs to support regulatory compliance and timely completion of inspections
- Coordinate with the Technical Lead (Analyst / Naval Architect) on engineering deliverables, technical specifications, and change management
- Coordinate with the Senior Marine Electrical Engineer on procurement, installation schedules, and commissioning plans for electrical systems
- Coordinate with the Recovery Offshore Operations Engineer to support vessel outfitting and recovery system installation timelines
- Coordinate with fellow Project Construction Managers to ensure complete coverage of construction activities across all disciplines and build phases
- Read and assess blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support informed decision-making and alignment with OEM best practices
- Assist in developing drawings and specifications to define requirements for vessel modifications as needed during construction
- Support FAT testing of marine electrical systems and automation equipment
- Support schedule mitigation efforts and corrective action planning during project execution
- Support verification planning, testing, and commissioning activities through vessel delivery
- Maintain accurate construction logs, inspection records, and documentation
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or equivalent
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in shipyard construction, port engineering, marine engineering, or vessel maintenance and repair
- Exposure to new vessel construction programs or standard shipyard construction practices
- Familiarity with United States Coast Guard inspection processes
- Familiarity with American Bureau of Shipping survey and classification processes
- Familiarity with performing work in compliance with CFRs, United States Coast Guard Standards, American Bureau of Shipping Guidelines, and other applicable standards for marine applications
- Ability to read and assess blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support construction operations within best practices of the OEM
- Exposure to FAT testing of marine electrical systems or automation
- Experience contributing to build schedules or providing input to status reports
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Strong safety mindset, including experience following established procedures during hazardous or critical operations
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience developing drawings and specifications to define requirements for vessel repairs and modifications
- Experience leading or supporting schedule mitigation efforts during project execution
- Exposure to subcontract management of suppliers including requests for proposal, specifications, and statements of work
- Familiarity with system safety concepts such as Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) or Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
