POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School's College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire Jazz A1 to join its team. Reporting to the Part Time Operations Manager, the Overhire Jazz A1is responsible for supporting the Audio and Video needs of academic performances and partnership events within the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
The A1 is responsible for the overall sound quality of live events and live streams, including concerts, panel discussions, and festivals across all schools within the College of Performing Arts. The A1 also leads and directs the audio crew during crew calls as needed.
This position reports to the Part-Time Operations Manager, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Understand and execute the technical aspects of each design, including interpreting audio needs, signal flow plans, I/O lists, and stage plots.
  • Mix Front of House (FOH), monitors, and streaming audio feeds, occasionally simultaneously on the same console.
  • Provide professional and courteous service to all parties.
  • Fulfill the role of System Technician, Console Operator, or both, depending on the size and scope of the event.
  • Manage setup, operation, and strike of equipment before, during, and after events. This includes operating audio consoles, playback systems, and all related audio gear.
  • Supervise and direct Audio Technicians to ensure completion of required tasks and delivery of the CoPA standard. Provide guidance and leadership as needed.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least 1 year of experience as a live sound engineer for concerts, corporate events or theater
  • Live-mixing skills and working knowledge of digital consoles, specifically, Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Midas, and Behringer
  • Excellent knowledge of proper gain structure and signal flow
  • Working knowledge of audio related software, such as Qlab 4&5, Wireless Workbench 6, Pro Tools, Logic. Dante Virtual Soundcard, Dante Controller, etc.
  • Ability to interpret event technical documents including technical riders, signal flow diagrams, input lists, stage plots, run-of-show, and cue lists.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organization, and time-management skills
  • Ability to communicate with other departments and event coordinator to ensure a smooth show.
  • Punctuality, professionalism, and a positive collaborative attitude when working with Students, Faculty, Staff, and Team Members.
  • Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School's suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and WorkDay.
  • Ability to adhere to university COVID-19 policy and requirements
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and the transformative power of the arts and education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Corporate, Special Events, Festival Sound, Line by Line Musical Mixing, and Broadcast experience are all plusses
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to safely climb ladders and scaffolding, operate Genies, and comfortable working at heights
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs

WORK MODE
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
SALARY RANGE
$35.00/hour
