A Stocker information

What is a stocker?

Stockers are employees responsible for replenishing shelves and displays in retail stores, grocery stores, and warehouses. Their main duties include unloading deliveries, organizing products, and ensuring items are correctly labeled and accessible to customers. Stockers play a vital role in keeping the store well-organized and ensuring that merchandise is available for shoppers. They may also help with inventory management and assist customers in locating products.

What are some common challenges stockers face, and how can they overcome them?

Stockers often encounter challenges such as managing heavy lifting, working efficiently during off-hours, and keeping shelves organized in a fast-paced environment. To overcome these, it's important to use proper lifting techniques, stay organized, and communicate with team members to restock high-demand items quickly. Adapting to changing priorities and maintaining attention to detail also help Stockers succeed and support overall store operations.

Is a stocker a hard job?

A stocker job involves physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for long periods while organizing and stocking shelves. It requires attention to detail, good organization skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, but it is generally considered manageable with proper training and safety precautions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stocker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stocker, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the physical ability to lift and move merchandise, typically with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with inventory management systems, barcode scanners, and pallet jacks is commonly required. Reliability, teamwork, and time management are important soft skills that help Stockers excel in their roles. These skills ensure shelves are well-stocked, inventory is accurately tracked, and store operations run smoothly for customers and staff.

Job Description:

Job Title: Checker/Stocker

Department: General

FLSA: Hourly

Revision Date: 07/2026

About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

Our Checker/Stockers keep the store running on two fronts at once, serving customers at the register and making sure shelves are stocked and ready for the next shopper. In this role, you'll handle everything from processing transactions and bagging groceries to unloading product and rotating merchandise. If you enjoy staying active, take pride in a well-stocked store, and love helping customers, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every visit a great one

  • Operate the cash register accurately, scanning product and processing all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions

  • Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets

  • Place merchandise in bags or boxes, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service

  • Unload product, open containers, stock shelves, and rotate product to ensure freshness and proper presentation

  • Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and take customers to items when requested

  • Stay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes and sale items

  • Keep the register area clean, ensure adequate supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer

  • Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable

  • Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone and answer customer questions, following up with appropriate personnel as needed

  • Stay aware of your surroundings to support store safety and security

  • Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of GM, Perishables, and Store Operations; Service Managers

Education and Experience

  • No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance

  • Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use)

  • Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product

  • Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor

  • Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing

  • Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment where you will be on your feet throughout your shift. You will have daily exposure to dirt, noise, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, and potential electrical hazards. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.

Are you ready to smile, apply today.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre employment drug screen.
