Job Description Summary
Organization's Summary Statement:
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. The department is searching for a world-class research leader to continue the research, education, and translational growth of the department. Responsibilities include leadership of a research-active academic department, program development with industrial partners, government labs, and foundations, and stewardship of strong academic programs.
The Fischell Department of Bioengineering is anchored in A. James Clark Hall, a 184,000-square-foot building constructed in 2018, which is home to world-class research and educational facilities, offering state-of-the-art laboratories, a core scientific instrument facility, student project space, and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices: https://eng.umd.edu/facilities/clark-hall. The Fischell Department of Bioengineering currently has 25 regular tenure track faculty (with plans to expand), 8 core professional track faculty, 32 affiliate faculty members, and 14 staff members. Together, researchers from these distinct disciplines tackle a broad spectrum of generational health challenges and drive medical innovations that benefit patients in Maryland and beyond. The Department is also dedicated to the vision of engineering entrepreneurship - getting science out of the lab and into the hands of doctors, care providers, and consumers. A number of start-up companies have been generated from ongoing research projects in the Department, and industrial collaborations are further enabling the research efforts to be translated to real-world technologies. With 450+ undergraduate students, 100+ graduate students, and more than $21 million in research expenditures in 2025, the department is a core education and research unit at the University of Maryland.
