Position Summary:
Sovah Health in Danville, VA., is seeking a Patient Safety Attendant to join our team. A Patient Sitter provides direct patient observation and input in planning care through communication with the RN and other patient care team members. Is effectively involved with maintaining the standard of care for assigned patients through communication with the care team. Maintains competency and possesses the skills to provide a safe environment to those medical patients requiring close supervision because of behavioral health issues. Completes duties as assigned and performs duties under the direct supervision of the RN.
The PSA will:
  • Provide observation for patients requiring supervision for safety reasons, i.e., patients on suicide precautions and patients with compromised judgment, and patients who need a companion due to a state of confusion or agitation.
  • Assist patients with general comfort needs, meals, and re-positioning, as needed.
  • Assist patients with bed-chair transfers and will also transport patients as needed.
  • Interact with patients as appropriate to provide diversionary activities to engage the patient, such as reading to the patient, working on a puzzle or similar activity, conversing with the patient, etc.
  • Assist with patient re-positioning and assist the patient with bed-chair transfers.
  • Assists patients with meals and feeds patients as needed.
  • Help patients with general comfort needs, e.g., adjusting covers or pillows, assist with water cups, etc.
  • Escorts patients with ambulatory privileges and always stays with the patient.
  • Assists patients to the bathroom, always supervises the patient, and requests assistance as needed.
  • Adheres to the Suicide Precautions Policy & Procedure when supervising a patient on restraints.
  • Adheres to the Restraint Policy and Procedure when supervising a patient in restraints.
  • Transports patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to designated sites as requested, including patients with oxygen tanks, intravenous pumps, drips, monitors, and other equipment.
  • Assists patients with entering and exiting vehicles, including transfer from or to wheelchairs or stretchers.
  • Transports patients for internal tests and transports discharged patients to exits.

Minimum Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Required Skills:
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns, including weekends and holidays, to ensure continuity of care and appropriateness of nursing coverage to the patients of Sovah Health Danville on all units.

Certifications:
  • Heartsaver CPR from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.

Minimum Work Experience:
  • Experience in a patient care setting preferred.
