Employer & IndustrySchools, educational institutionsSchools, educational institutions
Job FocusCleaning and basic maintenanceCleaning, repairs, and maintenance tasks

Both roles involve cleaning in school settings, but custodians typically handle more maintenance and repair duties, while janitors focus mainly on cleaning tasks. The titles are often used interchangeably, but custodians usually have a broader scope of responsibilities.

Do school janitors get paid more than teachers?

Generally, teachers tend to earn higher salaries than school janitors, as teaching positions require more formal education and certification. Janitors typically earn lower wages and may work evenings or weekends to perform cleaning duties, while teachers usually work during school hours with additional responsibilities. Salary differences can vary based on location, experience, and school district budgets.

How many hours does a school janitor work?

School janitors typically work full-time hours, often around 40 hours per week, which may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends for cleaning and maintenance tasks. Part-time positions are also available, with fewer hours depending on the school's needs and the janitor's schedule.

How to become a janitor in a school?

To become a school janitor, applicants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and should have basic cleaning skills and knowledge of cleaning tools and chemicals. Some positions may require prior experience or training in custodial work, and a criminal background check is often necessary. Employment is usually on a full-time or part-time basis, with shifts scheduled during school hours or evenings.

What do janitors in schools do?

Janitors in schools are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the school environment, including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, and disinfecting surfaces. They also perform minor repairs, ensure safety protocols are followed, and may assist with setting up facilities for events. The job often requires physical stamina and attention to cleanliness standards.
