Job description

Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer II in Boston, MA to help build and scale the platform-driven ecosystem powering Chewy Vet Care across clinics, digital experiences, and pharmacy. You will develop reliable backend services, APIs, and user-facing applications that support critical capabilities such as scheduling, prescriptions, medical records, payments, and more.
In this role, you will partner with Product, Data, Clinical, Design, and Engineering teams to solve technical problems and deliver intuitive, end-to-end experiences that support Chewy Vet Care's continued growth. You will contribute to the evolution of Chewy Vet Care toward a unified, platform-first architecture while expanding your expertise across Java-based services and React applications.
About You
You are a hands-on full stack engineer who enjoys building reliable software and creating intuitive user experiences. You consider usability, reliability, maintainability, performance, and customer impact when making technical decisions. You work effectively with teammates and cross-functional partners and are comfortable asking questions and incorporating feedback.
You have experience developing backend services with Java and Spring Boot, as well as building modern web applications with React and TypeScript. You are familiar with distributed systems, RESTful or GraphQL APIs, cloud-based environments, event-driven architecture, and modern CI/CD practices. You are also interested in using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude, responsibly to support engineering productivity while maintaining appropriate review, security, and quality standards.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, test, and maintain full stack applications using Java, Spring Boot, React, and TypeScript.
  • Develop backend services and APIs using AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, S3, and API Gateway.
  • Build accessible, responsive, and reusable user-interface components that support clinic, customer, and pharmacy workflows.
  • Deliver features throughout the software development lifecycle, including requirements refinement, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and post-launch support.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Data, and Engineering partners to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences.
  • Integrate frontend applications with backend services, Chewy Vet Care platforms, Chewy systems, and third-party services.
  • Troubleshoot issues across the application stack, participate in root-cause analyses, and implement improvements that strengthen system reliability, performance, and observability.
  • Apply engineering practices related to automated testing, secure coding, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, accessibility, and performance optimization.
  • Participate in design discussions and code reviews while incorporating feedback from senior engineers and technical partners.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to support productivity while applying appropriate review, security, quality, and human oversight.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and help maintain the operational health of production applications and services.

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of experience developing applications using Java and related frameworks such as Spring Boot.
  • Experience developing modern web applications using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
  • Experience working with cloud-based systems, microservices, RESTful or GraphQL APIs, and event-driven applications.
  • Experience troubleshooting applications using monitoring, logging, or messaging technologies such as Amazon CloudWatch, Dynatrace, SNS, SQS, or Kafka.
  • Knowledge of software engineering practices across the development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, automated testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond effectively to production issues.

Bonus
  • Experience developing software for healthcare or e-commerce environments.
  • Experience with frontend testing frameworks and component libraries.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies such as Scrum or XP
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts, including networking, compute, storage, monitoring, and virtualization.
