Description of Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Library Student Assistant for Gaming supports the library's community engagement efforts by planning, promoting, and facilitating tabletop, role-playing, and video gaming experiences that build community and encourage student connection. This position is ideal for a creative, organized student with a passion for games, storytelling, and creating welcoming spaces for players of all experience levels.
  • Collaborate with library staff to develop engaging gaming programs that foster community, creativity, and student engagement.
  • Facilitate tabletop role-playing games, including serving as a Dungeon Master (DM) for Dungeons & Dragons or similar role-playing systems.
  • Welcome and teach new players by explaining game rules, encouraging participation, and creating an inclusive, low-pressure environment.
  • Plan and host gaming events, including board game nights, tabletop RPG campaigns, one-shot adventures, and video game tournaments (e.g., Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros.).
  • Adapt gameplay to meet the needs and interests of participants while promoting collaboration, creativity, and positive sportsmanship.
  • Assist in maintaining the library's gaming collections by organizing materials, performing inventory, and conducting quality control checks.
  • Collaborate with student organizations and campus partners to develop co-sponsored gaming events and special programs.
  • Promote gaming events through outreach and assist with event setup, cleanup, and participant registration.
  • Complete other library assistant duties (shelving, shelf-reading, tidying public spaces, and other assigned tasks)as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Positive attitude, adaptable, and enthusiastic about supporting the library's mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Experience playing tabletop games, role-playing games, board games, or video games; experience serving as a Dungeon Master or game facilitator is strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable leading groups, teaching game rules, facilitating collaborative play, and resolving minor conflicts during gameplay.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to take initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Creative thinker with an interest in storytelling, improvisation, and community building.
  • Reliable, dependable, and committed to creating inclusive experiences for participants of all backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Must commit to working one evening shift (5:00-10:00 p.m.) Sunday through Thursday each week.
