Job description

About the Role:
The Billing position oversees the entire DME billing process for Unified Care Services, ensuring claims are submitted accurately and reimbursed promptly whether the work is performed by internal staff or by the company's third-party billing vendor. This role verifies insurance coverage, ensures documentation and coding meet regulatory standards, manages claim denials, and supervises a team of billing specialists. The Billing role also tracks billing performance metrics and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce errors. By maintaining compliant, well-documented billing operations and strong communication with insurance companies and healthcare stakeholders, this role protects the company's reimbursement cycle and supports its overall financial health.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in DME billing, medical billing, or a related revenue cycle role.
  • Basic math, bookkeeping, and accounting skills.
  • Strong written, verbal, and active listening communication skills.
  • Effective computer skills, including use of bookkeeping and account management software.
  • Understanding of industry-specific regulations, including HIPAA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior supervisory or team lead experience in a billing or revenue cycle department.
  • Experience working with a third-party billing/revenue cycle vendor (e.g., Brightree).
  • In-depth knowledge of DME billing codes and industry best practices.
  • Experience analyzing billing KPIs and implementing process improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the entire DME billing process, including activity carried out by the third-party billing vendor.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of claims to insurance providers, and monitor claim status to ensure prompt reimbursement.
  • Verify patients' insurance coverage for DME services and equipment, and ensure all required documentation is in place before claims are submitted.
  • Ensure DME billing codes comply with relevant healthcare coding standards and stay current on coding changes and regulations.
  • Investigate and address claim denials, and implement strategies to reduce future denials.
  • Maintain accurate, organized records of DME billing transactions that meet regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, physicians, and other stakeholders to gather information needed for billing.
  • Communicate with insurance companies to resolve issues and expedite reimbursement.
  • Stay informed on changes in healthcare regulations affecting DME billing, and ensure processes comply with HIPAA and other relevant requirements.
  • Supervise and lead the billing specialist team, including participation in weekly team meetings and providing guidance or training as needed.
  • Analyze billing performance metrics and KPIs, identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to enhance efficiency.
  • Utilize billing software and technology to streamline processes and reduce errors, staying current on relevant technological advancements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, with reporting relationship subject to change at the Company's discretion.

Skills:
The Billing position relies on strong communication and customer service skills — including patience, empathy, and active listening — to work effectively with patients, physicians, and insurance companies. Good problem-solving and critical thinking skills are essential for investigating claim denials and resolving billing issues efficiently. In-depth knowledge of DME billing codes and industry best practices, paired with basic bookkeeping and accounting skills, supports accurate claims submission and coding compliance. Strong organization, time management, and prioritization abilities allow the Billing role to oversee multiple claims and team responsibilities at once, while discretion in handling patient and customer information protects compliance with HIPAA and company policy. Comfort with billing and account management software rounds out the role, enabling efficient, technology-driven billing operations and team leadership.
