What is a 77081?

The code 77081 refers to a specific medical billing code used in the United States for bone density testing, specifically a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan of one or more sites of appendicular skeleton (such as the wrist, forearm, or heel). Healthcare professionals use this code to bill for the procedure, which helps assess the risk of osteoporosis or bone fractures. The DXA scan is a quick, non-invasive test that measures bone mineral density and is commonly ordered for patients at risk of bone loss. Understanding the use of this code ensures appropriate reimbursement and accurate medical records.
