What is a 5G RAN?

A 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) job involves designing, deploying, optimizing, and maintaining the radio network infrastructure for 5G wireless communications. Professionals in this role work on base stations, antennas, and signal processing to ensure efficient network performance and coverage. They collaborate with network engineers, vendors, and operators to enhance capacity, reduce latency, and support new technologies like Massive MIMO and beamforming. This job requires expertise in wireless protocols, RF engineering, and telecom standards such as 3GPP and O-RAN.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 5G RAN position?

To thrive in a 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) role, you need expertise in wireless communication principles, network architecture, and hands-on experience with 5G technologies, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with telecom tools such as network simulators, protocol analyzers, and vendors' RAN management systems, along with certifications like Nokia, Ericsson, or Huawei RAN, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to troubleshoot under pressure are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure efficient deployment, optimization, and maintenance of 5G networks in a rapidly evolving telecommunications environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in 5G RAN roles?

Professionals in 5G RAN roles often face the challenges of rapidly evolving technology, integrating new network components alongside legacy systems, and ensuring optimal network performance in diverse and complex environments. Troubleshooting unexpected network issues, managing increased data loads, and keeping up with frequent software and hardware updates are part of the typical workflow. These challenges require continuous learning and adaptability, but they also offer opportunities to develop advanced technical expertise and play a key role in deploying cutting-edge wireless technologies.

Job description

About Eridan

At Eridan we believe in the power of collaboration and communication to achieve our mission: connect the planet to empower a sustainable, shared future. That mission is possible with our patented transmitter which decreases the cost and power required to roll out 5G by 10x when deployed globally. This is all facilitated through our offices: our Sunnyvale headquarters has big windows (even in the lab!), is walking distance to downtown and the Caltrain, and fits the entire team in the cafeteria for our frequent company parties. Learn more about our mission here.

About this Job

We're looking for a Solution Engineer to join our Solutions team and own integrations between partner CU/DU stacks and Eridan's RU. You'll be the technical face of Eridan to our integration partners: explaining requirements, configuring and debugging systems, and validating that end-to-end performance is optimal - from the CU all the way down to the radio. This is not a coding role; it's a systems role for someone who understands how every part of a disaggregated RAN works well enough to make them all talk to each other.

You'll split your time roughly 85% in our lab and 15% in the field, with the opportunity to travel to partner and customer sites, including internationally.

What You'll Do

  • Manage partner integration projects autonomously, end to end - from first technical exchange to confirming the integration is complete and optimal.
  • Communicate directly with partner engineers: explain technical requirements, drive debugging, and keep projects moving.
  • Validate end-to-end system and network performance (core CU DU RU UE) against RF and network parameters, in the lab and in the field.
  • Validate new RU software releases against integrated end-to-end systems.
  • Integrate new features into end-to-end systems: new software versions, new devices on the network, and new radio variants (e.g., 4T4R, 100 MHz).
  • Work with different debugging tools, from Keysight RF testing tools to Viavi emulators and Wireshark.
  • Debug across Linux systems, network switching and fronthaul, and RAN configuration layers.
  • Conduct integration validation and field testing - controlled, repeatable measurement campaigns.

What You Bring

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years in telecommunication, network, or systems engineering (we'll consider 3+ years with strong RAN experience).
  • Fluency in Linux and the command line: navigating systems, editing configuration files, reading logs.
  • Solid understanding of RAN architecture - specifically Open RAN and disaggregated CU/DU/RU systems.
  • Solid debugging skills in all different RAN layers (L1, L2, L3).
  • Networking fundamentals: VLAN tagging, interface debugging, routing.
  • Working knowledge of 5G NR concepts: PRBs, channel bandwidth, TDD patterns, and how they affect system behavior.
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to run a project with external partners.
  • A hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves mindset - lab work, moving equipment, and outdoor field testing are part of the job.

Nice to Have

  • O-RAN 7.2a fronthaul split / lower-layer split interface experience; physical-layer familiarity.
  • RF background.
  • Customer-facing experience.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, etc.
  • Experience with test tools such as Wireshark, QualiPoc, Keysight, XCAL/XCAP, QXDM, etc.
  • Python scripting.
  • MS in Telecommunications.
  • Ability to travel internationally (Europe and Asia).

Perks of working at Eridan

  • Work on new technology that will make a significant impact on global infrastructure
  • Ability to learn, develop, and advance within a flexible environment
  • Collaborate with smart, passionate, and helpful co-workers
  • Celebrate progress company-wide
  • Pre-IPO equity
  • 401K with automatic match
  • Health, Vision and Dental insurance
