As of Aug 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for 5150 hold in the United States is $20.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.07 and $22.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a 5150 hold?

A 5150 hold refers to a section of the California Welfare and Institutions Code that allows qualified professionals to involuntarily detain a person with a mental illness for up to 72 hours for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. This type of hold is used when someone is deemed a danger to themselves, others, or is gravely disabled due to a mental disorder. During the 72 hours, mental health professionals assess the individual's condition and determine if further treatment or hospitalization is necessary. The goal is to provide immediate safety and connect the person with appropriate care.

What are the main challenges professionals face when managing patients under a 5150 hold, and how can they prepare for them?

Managing patients under a 5150 hold can be challenging due to the unpredictable nature of psychiatric crises and the need for quick, effective intervention. Professionals must balance patient safety, legal requirements, and compassionate care, often in high-pressure environments. Preparing for these challenges involves staying up-to-date on crisis intervention techniques, understanding legal protocols, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams including social workers, psychiatrists, and law enforcement. Strong communication skills and emotional resilience are essential for navigating difficult interactions and ensuring the best outcomes for patients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mental health crisis clinician responsible for 5150 holds, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mental Health Crisis Clinician responsible for 5150 holds, you need a background in psychology, social work, or nursing, typically with a relevant degree and state licensure. Familiarity with risk assessment tools, electronic health records, and crisis intervention protocols is crucial. Strong decision-making, empathy, and effective communication distinguish outstanding professionals in this role. These skills ensure accurate assessments, legal compliance, and compassionate care for individuals experiencing psychiatric emergencies.
