Job description

Position Description Job Summary: The Flood Control District has the mission to reduce the risk of flooding in Harris County, the third most populated county in the United States, with a population in excess of 4.7 million, including the City of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. The Flood Control District has jurisdiction over the primary stormwater facilities in the county, which consist of approximately 1,500 channels totaling nearly 2,500 miles in length, as well as more than 60 regional stormwater detention basins, totaling more than 10,000 acres, and several wetlands mitigation banks, including Greens Bayou. The Harris County Flood Control District is seeking qualified applicants for the Equipment Operator position which is responsible for operating a variety of heavy (large), mid-sized, and small equipment, engines, attachments, and hand tools used to maintain the County's channels and bayous

Essential Functions & Duties: Equipment Operation Operate heavy and/or technical equipment such as large trash trucks, airboats, skid steers, etc. Mix herbicide(s) in accordance with the manufacturer's label and dispense from truck, tractor, or 4-wheel drive extreme utility vehicles (XUV). Documentation & Reporting Record work performed on the daily activity sheet, track mileage, and complete herbicide reports.

Perform job hazard assessments, identify any obstacles to completing tasks, and report to the supervisor. Supervision & Team Support Assist in the supervision of crew members when needed. Field Maintenance Dislodge and remove drifts and debris from channels, basins, and vacant lots.

Requirements Education: High School Diploma/GED or equivalency Experience: Requires two (2) years of directly related work experience. Required Licenses: A valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank, standard shift endorsements, OR a TDA herbicide license Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good verbal & written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with coworkers and the public.

Good analytical skills in applying guidelines and adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions. Ability to work in an outdoor setting. Familiarity with operating gasoline-powered equipment and off-road vehicles.

Ability to work well with a team in a field environment. Ability to work independently with limited to no supervision. NOTE: Qualifying education, experience, knowledge, and skills must be documented on your job application.

May be exposed to vibration or noise in excess of 85 decibels. May be exposed to fluids, compounds, or chemicals used in cleaning offices and work areas. Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
