As of Jun 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for 3d model aviation in the United States is $21.54, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $23.56 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is 3D model aviation?

3D model aviation refers to the design, creation, and operation of three-dimensional, often remote-controlled, model aircraft. These models are built for recreational flying, competitive events, or as prototypes for larger aircraft designs. Enthusiasts and professionals use specialized software to create detailed models, which can then be constructed using materials like foam, balsa wood, or composites. 3D model aviation combines elements of aerodynamics, engineering, and creativity, making it a popular hobby and a stepping stone for careers in aerospace.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D Model Aviation professionals when collaborating with engineers and designers?

3D Model Aviation professionals often work closely with engineers and designers to ensure that their models meet strict technical and aerodynamic requirements. One common challenge is aligning creative design intentions with engineering constraints, which may require frequent revisions and clear communication. Additionally, managing tight project timelines while maintaining high levels of detail and accuracy in models can be demanding. Successful collaboration often involves regular meetings, openness to feedback, and a strong understanding of both artistic and technical perspectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Model Aviation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Model Aviation Specialist, you need a solid understanding of aerodynamics, proficiency in 3D modeling, and typically a degree in aerospace engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software like SolidWorks or CATIA, as well as simulation tools, is essential, and certifications in these platforms are highly valued. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing accurate, efficient, and innovative aviation components that meet industry standards and safety regulations.

What is the difference between 3D Model Aviation vs 3D Modeler?

The NISC IV program of Leidos is seeking a candidate with Virtual Reality (VR) modeling skills to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with 3D Modeling and VR of Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) siting projects. The 3D Modeler will use Autodesk Maya or 3ds Max, Blender, Adobe Illustrator, Google Earth, Unreal, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk InfraWorks, Blue Marble Global Mapper and QGIS in support of the ATCT siting projects. A key element of this support requirement is the ability to expertly create accurate three-dimensional (3D) designed FAA facilities and airports based on real site conditions, basic engineering concepts, or from existing AutoCAD drawings and be able to optimize those models for real-time VR applications.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Generate 3D VR models for FAA ATCT within the programs specified requirements.
  • Strong understanding of 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, UV maps, normal maps and optimization for real time rendering utilizing Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max or Blender for seamless export into the Unreal engine.
  • Ability to be a creative thinker, problem solver and work independently in a team environment.
  • Collaborate with the 3D modeling and VR development teams guiding best practices for real-time 3D model asset optimization for VR applications, promoting efficient workflows, and offering innovative tech solutions to maintain quality while maximizing performance.
  • Familiar with 3D modeling and optimizing CAD and BIM formats for use in VR applications.
  • Willing to participate in design reviews and provide creative input on VR experiences.
  • Willing to teach other team members, learn new software applications and techniques.
  • Willing to stay current with VR trends, 3D modeling techniques, and emerging tools.
  • Provide on-site technical support for VR tower siting assessments, including Audio/ Video troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving hardware/software compatibility issues, cabling, and conference sharing software platforms.
  • Experience with VR hardware setup and support.
  • Experience supporting VR demos, testing environments, and live presentations.
  • Assist with the deployment of VR systems at customer and tower siting locations when needed.
  • Support development of standard 3D Cab model formats (i.e., templates) for use across the siting team platform to ensure consistency.
  • Proactively identify areas that need to be improved based upon Siting meeting activities and policy changes.
  • Support program-specific standards and processes related to the development of 3D models.
  • Ability to write clear technical instruction documents for customer use.

Please note: This is a Remote role.
