What is a 3D lab?

A 3D lab is a specialized facility equipped with advanced technology for creating, scanning, and printing three-dimensional objects. These labs typically support research, education, and product development by providing access to 3D printers, scanners, modeling software, and other prototyping tools. Users can design and fabricate prototypes, models, or components in various materials, making 3D labs valuable in fields like engineering, medicine, architecture, and art. The lab staff often assist with technical support, training, and project guidance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D lab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Lab Technician, you need a solid background in 3D modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and an understanding of digital fabrication processes, often supported by a relevant technical degree or certification. Familiarity with 3D printers, scanning equipment, and software such as Autodesk, SolidWorks, or Blender is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure precise project execution, innovative solutions, and efficient collaboration in a technology-driven environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a 3D lab, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a 3D lab often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex 3D printers, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring consistent print quality. Collaboration with designers and engineers is essential to resolve design-for-manufacturability issues and optimize prototypes. To address these challenges, it's important to stay updated on the latest 3D printing technologies, maintain organized workflows, and communicate proactively with team members to anticipate and resolve technical or logistical obstacles.

What is the difference between 3D Lab vs 3D Modeler?

Aspect3D Lab
Required CredentialsTypically a degree or certification in 3D design, animation, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, studios, or facilities with specialized equipment for 3D printing, scanning, or prototyping
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by research institutions, manufacturing, and entertainment industries for development and testing

While a 3D Lab refers to a physical space or facility focused on 3D technology and prototyping, a 3D Modeler is a professional who creates digital 3D models. The lab provides the environment and tools, whereas the modeler produces the digital assets used in various projects. Both roles are interconnected but serve different functions within the 3D industry.

Job description

Job Description:
Senior Design Engineer - Advanced
At Milwaukee Tool, our people and our culture are the secrets to our success. In the Plumbing & Electrical Advanced Hydraulics group, we are transforming the way users interact with high-pressure fluid systems through innovation in hydraulic mechanisms, advanced valves, electromechanical control, and next-generation system architectures.
Behind our doors, you'll be empowered to own it, drive it, and deliver breakthroughs-with the autonomy to move fast and the support of one of the fastest-growing brands in the industry.
Your Role:
The Senior Design Engineer uses highly developed engineering expertise and independent project-driving abilities to design, analyze, and validate advanced hydraulic systems and mechanisms. You will lead technical development for new products and technologies, including valve systems, electromechanical actuation, and pump systems, while also supporting and improving existing platforms.
This role is ideal for someone who is a self-starter, thrives in ambiguity, and can take projects from concept to delivery with minimal oversight-a requirement also reflected in Milwaukee Tool's expectations for autonomy and leadership in senior engineering roles.
You'll be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:
  • Serve as the chief technical resource for hydraulic system & accessory design on mid- to high-complexity projects
  • Lead architecture development, modeling, prototyping, testing, and design reviews with minimal guidance
  • Define system-level requirements for hydraulic and electro-hydraulic subsystems.
  • Design and optimize high-pressure fluid circuits, valve geometries, flow controls, pump mechanisms, hydraulic tool accessories, and sealing strategies
  • Perform detailed engineering analysis, including fluid dynamics, tolerance stack-ups, material selection, & mechanical stress & fatigue
  • Develop and maintain simulation models (CFD, FEA, or equivalent) to predict system performance
  • Establish detailed test regimens for components and assemblies with minimal guidance, including hydraulic performance characterization, durability testing, and electromechanical integration validation
  • Work closely with test lab personnel to develop tests & analyze results
  • Drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions for field, lab, and reliability issues
  • Provide clear engineering information to project leaders, advanced engineering, and global engineering teams
  • Partner closely with manufacturing engineering to ensure robust production processes and assembly requirements
  • Collaborate with suppliers to define capabilities, tolerances, and performance expectations for hydraulic components
  • Drive ideation, concept development, and proof-of-concept builds for electro-hydraulic systems
  • Support front-end innovation efforts and contribute insights into future products and technology roadmaps.
  • Serve as a mentor and technical guide to junior engineers
  • Influence cross-functional teams through strong communication and technical clarity
  • Maintain professionalism and focus in fast-paced environments with shifting priorities

What TOOLS you'll bring with you:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or equivalent; Master's preferred
  • 5+ years of product design experience including ownership of complex fluid, mechanical, or electromechanical assemblies
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (Creo, SolidWorks, NX) and experience with FEA
  • Hands-on experience in hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, and flow-control elements
  • Deep mechanical aptitude, strong understanding of engineering materials, and associated manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering efforts with a high degree of autonomy and proactiveness

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with electromechanical actuators, sensors, solenoid valves, and embedded-controlled hydraulic systems
  • Familiarity with CFD tools or hydraulic simulation frameworks
  • Experience overseeing durable consumer or industrial product design from conception to market

Milwaukee Tool is an equal opportunity employer.
