What is 3D engineering?

3D engineering is a multidisciplinary field that involves designing, creating, and analyzing three-dimensional objects or models using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other digital tools. It is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, architecture, automotive, aerospace, and entertainment for product development, prototyping, and visualization. 3D engineers work on both the technical and creative aspects of projects, collaborating closely with other professionals to bring ideas from concept to reality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D engineer?

To thrive as a 3D Engineer, you need strong skills in spatial reasoning, CAD modeling, and a background in engineering or a related technical field. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, and relevant certifications such as Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP), are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this position. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering innovative engineering solutions.

What are some typical challenges faced by 3D engineers when working on cross-functional project teams?

3D Engineers often collaborate with designers, product managers, and manufacturing teams, which can present challenges such as aligning differing priorities, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring that 3D models meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. Effective communication is crucial to translate technical details for non-engineering colleagues and to incorporate feedback efficiently. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving 3D software tools and maintaining model accuracy under changing project scopes are common hurdles faced in this role.

What is the difference between 3D Engineering vs 3D Modeling?

CertificationsEngineering degrees, CAD certificationsPortfolio, software certifications

While both roles involve 3D software, 3D Engineering focuses on technical design, functionality, and engineering analysis, often requiring engineering credentials. 3D Modeling emphasizes artistic creation and visual aesthetics, typically used in entertainment and design industries. Understanding these differences helps professionals choose the right career path or project focus.

Are 3D engineering jobs in demand?

3D engineering jobs are in demand across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and entertainment, driven by advancements in CAD software, 3D modeling, and additive manufacturing. Professionals with skills in 3D design, simulation, and proficiency in tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD are sought after, especially as companies adopt new technologies for product development and prototyping.

Is a 3D engineering job a good career?

A 3D engineering job involves designing and developing three-dimensional models and prototypes using CAD software and 3D printing tools. It is a growing field with opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, and entertainment, often requiring technical skills and certifications. The career offers potential for advancement and specialization, depending on experience and industry demand.

What does a 3D engineer do?

A 3D engineer designs, develops, and tests three-dimensional models and prototypes for products, structures, or systems using CAD software and 3D modeling tools. They often collaborate with engineers, designers, and manufacturers to ensure accuracy and functionality in their designs, and may work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, or architecture.

Job description

Job Description

Wilson Engineering is seeking an experienced Senior CAD Designer / Drafter to join our team in our Bellingham, WA office. We are a civil engineering consulting firm serving municipal clients throughout Washington and Alaska, with a focus on water, wastewater, stormwater, transportation, and public infrastructure projects.

This position is a great opportunity for an experienced CAD professional who enjoys producing high-quality design drawings and models and working closely with engineers on projects from preliminary design through construction.

Position Summary

This position will provide advanced CAD and BIM design and drafting support for municipal infrastructure projects. Work may include water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, stormwater facilities, roadways, site civil improvements, and related public works projects.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of relevant experience and advanced proficiency in both AutoCAD Civil 3D and Autodesk Revit. This individual should be capable of working independently, developing detailed drawings and models from engineering concepts and markups, coordinating between multiple engineering disciplines, and helping maintain Wilson Engineering's CAD and BIM standards.

This position will work closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, and control systems engineers and designers to develop coordinated, accurate, and constructible project documents.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain detailed engineering drawings, construction documents, and 3D models for municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Develop Civil 3D drawings and models for water, wastewater, stormwater, transportation, utility, and site civil projects.
  • Create and manage Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, grading objects, pipe networks, pressure networks, data shortcuts, and related design elements.
  • Prepare plan and profile drawings, grading plans, utility plans, site plans, roadway plans, details, sections, and other civil construction documents.
  • Develop and maintain Revit models for water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, buildings, process structures, and other municipal facilities.
  • Coordinate Revit models and drawings between civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and process disciplines.
  • Integrate and coordinate Civil 3D and Revit workflows where projects require both civil site modeling and BIM-based facility design.
  • Develop drawing sheets, details, schedules, annotations, families, templates, and other project documentation.
  • Incorporate engineer markups, survey information, record drawings, GIS data, vendor information, and field measurements into project drawings and models.
  • Perform interdisciplinary drawing and model coordination to identify conflicts and inconsistencies before project submittals.
  • Assist engineers with development of design concepts and provide practical input regarding drawing organization, constructability, and CAD/BIM implementation.
  • Maintain drawing organization, file structures, external references, data shortcuts, sheet sets, model links, and project standards.
  • Support preparation of figures, exhibits, conceptual layouts, permit drawings, bid documents, and record drawings.
  • Perform CAD/BIM quality control reviews and help ensure consistency across project drawing sets.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of Wilson Engineering CAD and Revit standards, templates, libraries, styles, and workflows.
  • Provide technical assistance and mentoring to other CAD users as needed.
  • Coordinate effectively with engineers, project managers, surveyors, other designers, subconsultants, contractors, and client staff.
  • Manage multiple project assignments and meet project schedules and deadlines.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional CAD/design experience supporting civil engineering, infrastructure, architectural, or related engineering projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, grading, pipe networks, pressure networks, data shortcuts, styles, and plan production.
