What is 3D computer vision?

3D computer vision is a field within computer science and artificial intelligence that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world in three dimensions. Unlike traditional 2D computer vision, which works with flat images, 3D computer vision uses data from sources like stereo cameras, LiDAR, or depth sensors to reconstruct and analyze the shape, size, and position of objects in a scene. This technology is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented reality, and medical imaging. By understanding the spatial relationships between objects, 3D computer vision systems can enable machines to interact more effectively with their environment.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D computer vision engineers during project development?

3D Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as managing noisy or incomplete data from sensors, ensuring real-time processing speeds, and integrating algorithms with various hardware platforms. Additionally, adapting solutions to diverse environments—such as changing lighting conditions or object occlusions—requires robust model design and continual testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, is key to overcoming these challenges and successfully deploying 3D vision applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3d computer vision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, mathematics (especially linear algebra and geometry), and programming, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in Python or C++, experience with libraries like OpenCV and PCL, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help candidates excel in developing novel algorithms and collaborating across disciplines. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating innovative 3D perception systems that meet real-world challenges and drive advancements in areas like robotics, AR/VR, and autonomous vehicles.

Working for ECHO means joining a team of people who are committed to collaboration, innovation, creativity, and high-quality products that make us a globally competitive brand.

ECHO is hiring in our Engineering Department! The Project Engineer will play a key role in the design of outdoor power equipment using 3D CAD (SolidWorks) in a team environment. The ideal candidate will have product design experience using various manufacturing methods and the ability to actively participate in the new product development process. ECHO offers a great opportunity to work with different manufacturing technologies, materials, and diverse resources.

The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $120,000 based on experience and qualifications.

This is an on-site position based at our Lake Zurich, IL location.

ECHO’s benefits include:

  • Extremely affordable medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Yearly bonus potential
  • 5% 401K match
  • Tuition reimbursement

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Represent Product Engineering on new product development teams for both manufactured and sourced products.
  • Provide design recommendations and clarifications to development partners through presentations, design reviews, and sketches.
  • Create complex, tooling-ready SolidWorks (and imported) 3D models and 2D drawings across manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, electrical, and machining.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment within Engineering and across cross-functional groups (Manufacturing, Product Management, Procurement, etc.).
  • Identify and propose improvements to reduce non-value-added work, improve procedures, and minimize errors.
  • Partner with the testing team to define appropriate durability and performance test plans.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers and designers on product design and development best practices.
  • Support the change management process, including ECRs, ECOs, and basic BOM development.
  • Travel occasionally to suppliers and development partners (domestic and international), typically less than 10%.

Job Experience/Skills:

  • Demonstrate strong technical, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Professional experience using Solidworks 3D CAD required, minimum 5 years’ experience.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Solidworks, or other preferred tools to create and manipulate sketches to show design progression or alternative design options.
  • An understanding of what design features represent visual brand language is a plus.
  • Industrial design experience is also a plus.
  • Ability to create and check 2D drawings that define the product geometry and requirements with attention to detail to prevent published errors.
  • Communicate with vendors (written and verbally) the important features of a design and the quality expectations needed.
  • Practical design knowledge of injection molding resins, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and other typical materials found in consumer products (specifically outdoor power equipment/power tools).
  • Knowledge of tolerances for various manufacturing methods.
  • Use of measurement tools (Calipers, micrometer, gage pins, comparator, etc.) to validate design features.
  • Light fabrication skills using a variety of tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education: A 4-year college degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field of study is required and 7+ years of relevant professional experience.
