3D Computer Vision information

What is 3D computer vision?

3D computer vision is a field within computer science and artificial intelligence that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world in three dimensions. Unlike traditional 2D computer vision, which works with flat images, 3D computer vision uses data from sources like stereo cameras, LiDAR, or depth sensors to reconstruct and analyze the shape, size, and position of objects in a scene. This technology is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented reality, and medical imaging. By understanding the spatial relationships between objects, 3D computer vision systems can enable machines to interact more effectively with their environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3d computer vision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, mathematics (especially linear algebra and geometry), and programming, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in Python or C++, experience with libraries like OpenCV and PCL, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help candidates excel in developing novel algorithms and collaborating across disciplines. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating innovative 3D perception systems that meet real-world challenges and drive advancements in areas like robotics, AR/VR, and autonomous vehicles.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D computer vision engineers during project development?

3D Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as managing noisy or incomplete data from sensors, ensuring real-time processing speeds, and integrating algorithms with various hardware platforms. Additionally, adapting solutions to diverse environments—such as changing lighting conditions or object occlusions—requires robust model design and continual testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, is key to overcoming these challenges and successfully deploying 3D vision applications.

Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | MANUFACTURING ENGINEER-MECHANICAL | Sycamore, IL area

This is a well-established, globally operating industrial manufacturer that produces large-scale engineered equipment for infrastructure and industrial storage applications. The Illinois facility is a high-volume production site running stamping and punch presses, laser cutting, and automated conveyance systems. The company needs a Manufacturing Engineer – Mechanical to own process design and equipment optimization across fabrication, coating, and assembly operations. This is a hands-on engineering seat with direct visibility to plant leadership and real capital-project ownership — not a desk-only design job.

  • Anticipated $110,000–$135,000, based on experience
  • Full suite of benefits: Health/Dental/Vision, PTO

Overview

  • Own process design and equipment selection for stamping, laser cutting, and automated production lines
  • Cut production cost without giving up quality on new and existing product lines
  • Lead capital equipment projects from justification through implementation
  • Troubleshoot and improve mechanical and electrical performance of production equipment
  • Turn plant-floor problems into standardized work procedures that actually get used
  • Train production teams on new equipment and processes
  • Use production data to find and close performance gaps

Preferred Skills/Experiences

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 10+ years designing manufacturing equipment, tooling, and fixtures
  • Extensive 3D CAD design experience
  • Hands-on experience with CNC, punch presses, fiber lasers, robotics, and PLCs
  • Equipment programming experience (lasers, robots, sensors, PLCs)
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, and Six Sigma
  • Experience with facility layout, process design, PFMEA, and DOE
  • Track record leading cross-functional teams to project completion
  • Comfortable communicating from shop floor to executive level
  • Up to 10% travel
