What are 2L law students?

2L law students are individuals in their second year of law school in a typical three-year Juris Doctor (JD) program. The 2L year is often regarded as pivotal, as students start to choose electives, participate in law journals, clinics, and begin applying for summer internships or associate positions. This year is also when many students focus on building their resumes and gaining practical legal experience through externships and moot court competitions. The workload can be intense, but it is essential for career development and specialization.

What is a 2L law student?

A 2L law student is a second-year student in law school, typically in their second academic year of a three-year Juris Doctor program. At this stage, students often participate in internships, moot court, and other practical experiences to prepare for legal careers and bar exam eligibility.

How much do 2L jobs pay?

2L law students typically earn summer associate or internship positions that pay between $1,500 and $3,000 per week, depending on the firm and location. During the academic year, part-time legal internships may pay hourly wages ranging from $15 to $30. Compensation varies based on the employer, geographic area, and the student's experience level.

Can you work during 2L law school?

2L law students can work part-time jobs, internships, or clerkships while attending school, but they must balance their workload with academic commitments. Many students seek legal internships or externships during the summer or semester to gain experience, often requiring approval from their law school. Employment options may be limited by time constraints and licensing requirements for certain legal roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 2L Law Student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 2L Law Student, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically developed through foundational 1L coursework and continued academic rigor. Familiarity with legal research tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and proficiency in using citation software such as Bluebook, are particularly valuable. Time management, adaptability, and networking abilities help distinguish students as they balance academics, extracurriculars, and internship pursuits. These skills are essential for excelling in coursework, securing competitive internships, and building a successful legal career.

What types of responsibilities and experiences can 2L law students expect during summer internships?

As a 2L law student, summer internships typically offer more substantive legal work than 1L positions. You may assist in drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, and sitting in on client meetings or court proceedings. Many employers expect 2Ls to handle more complex assignments with greater independence, which helps develop practical skills and can lead to full-time job offers after graduation. You'll also have opportunities to network with attorneys and receive feedback to further your legal career.

What is the best job for a law student?

The best jobs for a 2L law student often include internships, clerkships, or research assistant positions that provide practical legal experience. These roles help develop skills such as legal research, writing, and analysis, and may be available through law school clinics or externship programs.
