2D Motion Graphics Designer information

What does a 2D motion graphics designer do?

A 2D Motion Graphics Designer creates animated visuals using two-dimensional artwork, including graphics, typography, and illustrations. They bring static designs to life by adding movement, transitions, and effects, often for videos, advertisements, presentations, or digital content. Their work involves using software such as Adobe After Effects and Illustrator to communicate ideas, tell stories, or enhance visual appeal. They collaborate closely with creative teams and clients to ensure the animations align with project goals and brand identity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 2D motion graphics designer?

To thrive as a 2D Motion Graphics Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, animation techniques, and proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop, often backed by a degree in graphic design or related field. Familiarity with motion tracking, keyframing, and rendering tools, as well as knowledge of video editing platforms like Premiere Pro, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help designers interpret briefs and deliver engaging visual stories. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality, on-brand animations that capture audience attention and meet client objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by 2D motion graphics designers when working on collaborative projects?

2D Motion Graphics Designers often work closely with creative directors, animators, and clients, which can present challenges in aligning artistic vision and meeting varying expectations. Balancing creativity with project constraints like tight deadlines and specific brand guidelines is a frequent hurdle. Clear communication and adaptability are essential to ensure the final motion graphics meet both the client's objectives and the team's technical requirements. Regular feedback sessions and version control help streamline the collaboration process and minimize revisions.

This is a senior, hands-on creative role for someone who loves making work that is sharp, thoughtful, and useful. You'll work across a broad range of brand and marketing touchpoints, including integrated campaigns, social, events, presentations, sales enablement, web, executive storytelling, product marketing, and motion-led content.

We're looking for someone with exceptional design craft, high standards, strong business judgment, and genuine curiosity about where creative work is headed. You'll work across multiple tools, formats, and channels with an AI-first mindset. Motion design is a bonus, especially if you can bring static ideas to life through animation, video, or simple storytelling sequences.

Key Skills

  • A high-caliber portfolio demonstrating exceptional craft across brand identity, integrated campaigns, digital experiences, and marketing communications.
  • Significant experience creating executive and board-level presentations, with the ability to translate complex or sensitive business information into clear, compelling visual stories.
  • Experience developing creative for major events, including environmental graphics, digital experiences, presentation content, and supporting campaign assets.
  • Proven ability to extend a central creative concept across social, web, product marketing, sales enablement, presentations, and other digital and physical touchpoints.
  • Experience partnering directly with senior executives and navigating high-stakes, highly visible work with confidence, discretion, and strong creative judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take an ambiguous business need from early concept through polished, production-ready execution.
  • Mastery of design fundamentals, including typography, layout, hierarchy, imagery, and composition, with an uncompromising eye for detail.
  • A sophisticated understanding of brand systems and the ability to apply and evolve them consistently across diverse platforms.
  • Expertise in Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and modern presentation tools.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating AI into real creative workflows, including concept development, image or video generation, rapid exploration, and production.
  • The judgment to evaluate, refine, and elevate AI-generated output so the final work remains distinctive, on-brand, and held to a high creative standard.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborative inputs while maintaining quality and moving work forward at pace.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain creative decisions, receive constructive feedback, and respectfully challenge a direction when it will lead to a stronger outcome.
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • A proven track record of contributing to rebrands, visual identity shifts, or comprehensive brand refreshes.
  • Proficiency in motion design, animation, video production, or storyboarding.
  • Hands-on experience with After Effects and Premiere Pro, along with AI-powered creative tools such as Midjourney, Runway, Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, or Claude.
  • Experience creating high-impact work for demand generation, product launches, executive communications, global events, or brand awareness campaigns.

  • Act as a trusted creative partner to senior leaders, helping shape the story and creative direction behind high-visibility company initiatives, executive communications, board presentations, and strategic events.
  • Take ownership of projects from initial brief and concept development through refinement, production, and final delivery.
  • Partner with the Senior Creative Lead and Brand leadership to strengthen and evolve the Degreed visual identity across global digital and physical touchpoints.
  • Apply brand standards with precision while identifying opportunities to make the brand more distinctive, flexible, and effective.
  • Create scalable templates, shared libraries, and reusable assets that help the broader organization move faster without sacrificing quality or brand integrity.
