Job description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation builds internal software tools to support the design, manufacturing, and certification of our aircraft. Our engineers build applications that aggregate and fuse data across varied sources and leverage AI-assisted workflows to enable rigorous and aerospace-safe hardware development with the velocity of a software startup.

As a Software Engineering Intern at Joby, you will work alongside a small team of full-stack and data engineers to ship user-facing features in tools used daily across the company. Stakeholders range from design to manufacturing including quality assurance and supply chain. All need those tools to design, certify and manufacture Joby's electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

You will gain hands-on experience building React interfaces, integrating with backend services, contributing to AI-integrated features, and working with modern data infrastructure. This role is ideal for students who enjoy building software end-to-end in a high-trust environment where shipped work has visible, immediate impact. Expect an internship that resembles a job you would have after graduating.

Responsibilities
  • Build and ship frontend features - React components for data-dense tables, interactive charts, filter controls, and detail views used by engineers across the company.
  • Integrate the frontend with backend services - wire up REST endpoints, manage client-side state, and handle loading, error, and empty states cleanly.
  • Contribute to AI-integrated features - support the development of agentic systems that help users digest information from engineering change proposals, with hands-on work on prompt engineering and agentic harness development.
  • Contribute to data engineering - support the development of data pipelines that connect engineering change request systems using Databricks.
  • Iterate with real users - sit with the engineers who use these tools daily, gather feedback, refine the user experience, and translate ambiguous requirements into well-scoped tickets.
  • Own quality on your work - write tests for the features you ship, participate in code review, and advocate for code quality across the codebase.
Required
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on experience building user-facing interfaces with React (or a comparable modern frontend framework such as Vue or Svelte) through coursework, internships, hackathons, or personal projects.
  • Solid working knowledge of JavaScript and HTML/CSS; comfortable with TypeScript or willing to ramp up quickly.
  • Comfort consuming REST APIs - making requests, handling responses, and managing client-side state.
  • Familiarity with Git and standard collaborative development workflows (branches, pull requests, code review).
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to ask good questions, surface tradeoffs, and work effectively with engineers across frontend, backend, data, and product.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift, and ambiguity is part of the work.
Desired
  • Production-style experience with TypeScript, not just introductory examples.
  • Exposure to data visualization libraries such as Recharts, D3, or Plotly.
  • SQL experience - comfortable writing queries against relational databases.
  • Experience with Python and FastAPI, building ETL or data pipelines on Databricks, or working with AI agent frameworks such as LangGraph or the OpenAI Agents SDK.
  • Interest in or exposure to LLM-integrated applications (prompting, agents, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation, Model Context Protocol).
  • Prior internship, co-op, or substantial open-source or personal-project contribution.
  • Interest in aerospace, manufacturing, or hardware-adjacent software.
