General Description
The purpose of this position is to collaborate with the Faculty Director and the Lead Teacher of the Child Study Center (CSC) in planning and implementing a quality program for young children based on their developmental needs, and provide an appropriate curriculum/environment to enhance total development, facilitate learning, and build nurturing relationships.
Essential Job Duties
1. Read, understand, and apply the guidelines established by the licensing/accrediting agencies and by the policies of the UM Child Study Center.
2. Work with the Lead Teacher to prepare written plans for daily and monthly activities based on the developmental needs, interests, and abilities of the individual children in the group.
3. Work with the Lead Teacher to create an environment which invites children to explore; provides successful experiences; promotes active participation with materials, children and/or staff; and is orderly, consistent, safe, and clean.
4. Assist children with the development of appropriate self-help skills (i.e., dressing, toileting, resting, eating).
5. Supervise activities at all times to ensure the safety of each child.
6. Implement appropriate methods of guidance and discipline according to accrediting criteria and policy guidelines.
7. Assist the Lead Teacher in arranging classroom and monitoring equipment safety and upkeep of classroom.
8. Guide children to develop a sense of self-worth and the worth of others and the environment. Foster development of creativity, imagination, and curiosity as children interact with their world. Model a sense of humor, enthusiasm, and concern for others.
9. Mainstream children with special needs, making the necessary preparations and adjustments for a successful experience.
10. Assist with observation and evaluation of children. Document their progress and changes on a regular basis.
11. Attend parent group meetings and other school functions.
12. Assist with updating children's records to keep information current. Maintain attendance records.
13. Attend scheduled staff meetings. Participate in required professional development training, earning annually a minimum of twelve hours in the six professional development areas specified by the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Engage in other appropriate professional development activities.
14. Participate in evaluating the program on a continual basis to determine weaknesses and strengths.
15. Take responsibility for additional tasks as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned, providing it does not interfere with supervision of children.
16. Serve as a role model for students observing and participating in the activities of the CSC. Collaboratively with the course instructors plan, guide, and evaluate activities performed by the college students.
