Job Description

Job Title:                     Special Education Paraprofessional
                                    Instructional
Reports to:                  Site Principal

Job Goal:         The Paraprofessional assists special education and general education teachers in keeping students on task, monitors and/or reinforces positive behavior, social skills, organizes instructional materials which address objectives on the educational plan, assists students in maintaining good personal hygiene, escorts students to and from various places, records student progress in meeting objectives, assists with implementation of behavior management programs, and helps to maintain an orderly classroom.  We are looking for individuals that value relationships with staff and students.  Our paraprofessionals play a vital role in the operations of Waseca Intermediate School.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties
 

1. Assist the special education teacher in keeping students on task using positive reinforcement during large group and/or individual activities.

1. Monitor and/or reinforce positive student behavior during breakfast, snack time, lunch, playtime, riding the bus, field trips, and when escorting students to various school and community environments.

1. Assist students in transitioning to the regular classroom setting by helping them with classroom activities and reinforcing appropriate behavior and social skills.

1. Collaborate and Communicate with special education teachers and service providers.

1. Foster independent functioning of the student to the maximum extent possible. 

1. Establish positive relationships with staff and school community.

1. Move with student/s from classroom to classroom if required.

1. Complete responsibilities in a timely manner.

1. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in school and community.

1. Ensure attendance (at least 95%), punctuality and dress are appropriate.

1. Participate in district provided staff development opportunities.

1. Other Duties as Assigned.

 
Special Education Paraprofessional Specific Duties
 

1. Under the direction of licensed special education instructional and/or related services staff, assists one or more students with instructional activities, including one-on-one and small group instruction while monitoring learning.

1. Reinforce instructional material presented by the teacher with students individually or in small groups, as directed by the supervising teacher(s). 

1. Complete certification in the crisis intervention program provided by the District.

1. Assist licensed staff in managing student behavior.  Reinforce licensed staff in managing student behavior.  Reinforce appropriate behaviors and maintain discipline in accordance with District policies and procedures, IEPs or behavioral intervention plans, as appropriate.

1. Facilitate the safety and success of disabled students in the least restrictive environment as defined on their IEP.

1. Provide feedback to the instructional staff (verbally or through data) as to the progress of a student towards achieving their IEP goals and objectives.

1. Foster as much student independence as possible within the academic environment.

 
QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

1. No licensing required.

1. Knowledge of: various disabilities and special needs conditions; tutoring principles; child development principles; and behavior management principles.

1. Skilled in: working with children in various conditions; one-on-one supervision; group supervision; and assisting children and teachers with various tasks.

1. Possess communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 

1. Positions in the class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing.

1. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

1. Some positions may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
