Role Overview

Voting Rights Lab, a national nonpartisan 501(c)(3), and its 501(c)(4) affiliate are fighting the state-level battles that will shape elections in 2026, 2028, and for decades to come. In 2025 alone, we stopped a wave of proof-of-citizenship mandates in red and purple states from Texas to Michigan, and produced the first-ever map of election law vulnerabilities — showing where losing candidates can exploit state laws to challenge legitimate results. Grounded in deep state-level relationships and cross-ideological credibility, we anticipate threats and deliver solutions where democracy is most at risk.

The Coalition Director serves as the primary relationship manager and strategic coordinator for a transformational multi-organization coalition focused on countering disinformation, building cross-partisan support for policy initiatives, and creating a broader, more resilient pro-democracy movement. This role manages coalition operations, mobilizes member organizations, drives recruitment and engagement, and helps shape the coalition’s external narrative and impact in order to hone and develop stronger cross-ideological organizing models for the broader pro-democracy movement.

The ideal candidate is a skilled coalition-builder and relationship manager who can work effectively with executives and partner organizations to bring grassroots programs to scale and grow the breadth and depth of participation and impact. This role requires strong facilitation, communication, grassroots organizing, and program management capabilities, as well as experience in building partnerships and coalition infrastructure to drive collective action.

The Advancing Liberty Coalition is the heart of what makes Voting Rights Lab unusual in the democracy space. It brings together organizations that don't typically share a table: center-right democracy organizations, veterans and military families, Mormon and evangelical women's organizations, disability advocates, and business leaders. Voting Rights Lab is a fully remote organization, and this position can be based anywhere in the United States. This position will require occasional travel, representing about 15% of the time.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Coalition Management, Member Engagement, and Organizing

• Manage, coordinate, and drive a transformational coalition of partner organizations aligned around advancing cross-ideological democracy work.
• Develop organizing models and drive opportunities across the coalition that help move campaigns, support the growth of membership organizations, and build power.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for coalition members, ensuring strong engagement, alignment, and relationship-building that scales impact.
• Conduct and facilitate coalition meetings, including preparing agendas, capturing notes, generating action items, and ensuring follow-through on deliverables for collective action.
• Identify and assess member organization needs and translate them into actionable coalition programs and initiatives that nurture program growth and shared impact.
• Cultivate strong, trust-based relationships with member organizations and executive-level stakeholders that support forward momentum and effect pro-democracy change.
• Drive coalition programming based on member needs and strategic priorities to scale the coalition’s work in both breadth and depth.
• Lead recruitment and onboarding of new coalition members to expand reach, grow impact, and strengthen shared organizing models.
• Push the co-creation and implementation of the coalition strategy. Ideate, incubate, nurture, and iterate on shared programs with members, advocacy, and leadership teams.
• Nurture, build, and strengthen coalition infrastructure, processes, and systems to support long-term sustainability and growth.
• Understand, monitor, and drive coalition programs in our state portfolio. Identify organizing opportunities for coalition members that grow from our core state campaigns, provide strategic advantages to our programming, and build power for members.

Communications & External Representation

• Serve as a spokesperson for the coalition alongside members of the advocacy team.
• Develop materials, assets, and reports that amplify coalition work and shape a compelling public narrative.
• Collaborate closely with communications and development teams to align messaging, storytelling, and fundraising opportunities to grow our network and shared resources for the coalition.
• Represent the coalition in external meetings, convenings, and strategic partnerships.

Operations & Systems Management

• Manage coalition database and CRM systems, ensuring accurate tracking of members, engagement, and activities.
• Develop and maintain systems for tracking progress, action items, and program outcomes to support iteration and improvement of ongoing programming.
• Support reporting and evaluation efforts to demonstrate coalition impact and inform strategy.

What we’re looking for in you:

• 10+ years of experience in advocacy, policy, organizing, or related fields.
• Demonstrated success in managing partnerships, coalitions, or multi-organization initiatives.
• Experience working with executive leaders, directors, and senior stakeholders.
• Experience envisioning, planning, driving, and scaling grassroots organizing initiatives.
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to cultivate trust across diverse perspectives and values to drive collective action and forward momentum.
• Experience and enthusiasm for working across partisanship and engaging with moderate to conservative, center, or center-right organizations.
• Proven ability to design, implement, and scale programs based on stakeholder or member needs and impact.
• Experience serving as a spokesperson or representing an organization or coalition externally, with effective storytelling and networking.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the development of reports, narrative materials, and strategic communications assets.
• Experience collaborating with communications, advocacy, and development teams and leveraging coalition or constituency organizing models for change.
• Proficiency in database and CRM management.
• Highly organized with strong project management and follow-through skills.
• Strategic thinker with the ability to balance relationship management, operations, and program execution.

The Coalition Director is in the Director pay band, and the hiring range for this position is $110,000-$130,000 per year. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may also vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors. The total compensation package may include the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, depending on the level and position offered.
