Job description

The Barge Foreman is a skilled professional who leads and participates in the construction, maintenance, and repairs of seawalls and marine structures.  S/he oversees a crew, provides on-site leadership, while also performing hands-on labor.  Responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, such as barges, cranes, excavators, and skid loaders to install various types of seawalls, including sheet piling, forming, and pouring seawall caps.

  • High School Diploma; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of related experience in heavy construction, preferable marine structures. 
  • Ability to identify and resolve equipment malfunctions and operational issues.
  • The ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of, experience with, and ability to understand and work with complex mechanical equipment. 
  • Strong scheduling, problem resolution, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Strong analytical skills; very detail oriented, organized, and able to lead, motivate, and guide a work crew. 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; function effectively as part of a team; ability to work under pressure; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Proficiency in MS Office. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel, walk, talk, see, hear, push, pull, climb, bend, and stoop.  The employee frequently is required to stand, (for up to 8 eight hours), walk (occasionally on rough terrain/in varying weather conditions), climb, use manual dexterity to operate tools used in the course of work, hear sufficient to hear conversations in person, and via telephone and radio, and vision sufficient for distance sight and to read diagrams, computer screens, manual reports, rules, regulations, laws, and plans. The employee is occasionally required to reach, push, and pull with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity may involve stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions. The employee must be able to maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities occurring at the site, including the activities of other employees, and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Lead, coordinate, and participate in the construction, repair, and maintenance activities of a crew working on marine structures; act as the main point of contact between the crew and management.
  • Provide on-the-job training for crew members in construction methods, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Guide the day-to-day operations on an assigned project and ensure that proper resources are in place for the timely completion of work, including labor, tools, equipment and material; oversee crew activities to ensure compliance with design specifications and quality of finished product. 
  • Operate and maintain equipment and specialized machinery; perform hands-on marine construction tasks, including rigging, material handling, and site preparation; lead preventive maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability. 
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and supplies are in good working order and properly stored; review equipment condition, maintenance, and repair needs; observe and monitor employees and equipment to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards; maintain detailed logs and document all work performed on equipment. 
  • Promote a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task; properly follow all Company policies and OSHA/EPA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Perform projects and other duties as assigned.
