Director, Safety & Compliance
Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid) with frequent travel to TTX facilities and operating locations throughout North America
About TTX
TTX Company is a leading provider of railcars and freight car management services to the North American rail industry. Every day, we partner with North America's railroads to support the movement of goods across the continent by providing an efficient pool of railcars where loadings are maximized and empty miles are minimized.
Safety is foundational to everything we do. At TTX, protecting our employees, maintaining regulatory compliance, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement are critical to our success. We are committed to creating a workplace where safety is embedded in every decision and where employees are empowered to do the right thing.
Why Work at TTX?
This is an opportunity to lead enterprise-wide safety and compliance strategy for one of the most respected organizations in the railroad industry.
The Director, Safety & Compliance serves as a key advisor to executive leadership and operational teams, ensuring that safety remains at the forefront of business decisions while maintaining full compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. This highly visible role offers the opportunity to influence culture, strengthen operational performance, and drive meaningful improvements across the organization.
You'll join a company that values collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement while providing the resources and support necessary to build world-class safety programs.
About the Role
The Director, Safety & Compliance is responsible for leading TTX's employee health, safety, environmental compliance, and regulatory compliance functions. This role oversees the development and execution of company-wide safety programs, training initiatives, compliance reporting processes, and risk management strategies.
The successful candidate will serve as a trusted partner to leaders across the business, helping ensure safety and compliance considerations are integrated into operational decision-making, strategic planning, and process improvement efforts.
This position also provides leadership and development for the Safety team while serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, external auditors, and safety consultants.
What You'll Do
- Develop and execute TTX's enterprise safety and compliance strategy.
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of employee health and safety programs across all operating locations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, provincial, and local regulations, including OSHA, FRA, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
- Oversee organizational safety training programs and ensure timely completion of all required regulatory training.
- Direct incident investigations and corrective action programs to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments to proactively identify hazards, compliance gaps, and operational risks.
- Partner closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, human resources, and leadership teams to strengthen safety culture and accountability.
- Lead compliance reporting processes and ensure accuracy, timeliness, and audit readiness of safety documentation and records.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, regulatory agencies, consultants, and industry organizations.
- Monitor industry trends, emerging regulations, and best practices to ensure TTX maintains a proactive approach to safety and compliance.
- Drive process improvement, technology adoption, and automation initiatives that improve reporting, compliance management, and operational effectiveness.
- Coach, mentor, and develop safety professionals while fostering a high-performing team environment.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means safety is viewed as a strategic business advantage rather than a compliance requirement.
A successful Director, Safety & Compliance will:
- Strengthen TTX's safety culture across all levels of the organization.
- Reduce operational risk through proactive hazard identification and mitigation.
- Maintain strong regulatory relationships and consistently achieve compliance objectives.
- Ensure employees are equipped with the training, tools, and resources needed to operate safely.
- Improve visibility into safety performance through meaningful metrics, reporting, and analytics.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives that simplify processes and improve organizational effectiveness.
- Build trusted partnerships with business leaders and influence decision-making through sound judgment and expertise.
- Develop and mentor talent within the Safety organization.
What You'll Bring
- Deep expertise in occupational health and safety, compliance management, and risk mitigation.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state safety regulations, including OSHA, FRA, and related transportation or industrial safety requirements.
- Experience leading incident investigations, corrective action programs, and compliance reporting activities.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate across multiple business functions and leadership levels.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Experience developing safety metrics, dashboards, and reporting tools that drive business action.
- Proven experience leading organizational change and safety culture initiatives.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage employees, leaders, regulators, and external stakeholders.
- Strong process improvement mindset with experience implementing systems, automation, and operational efficiencies.
- Commitment to ethical leadership, accountability, and continuous development.
Preferred Experience
- 10+ years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, regulatory compliance, environmental health and safety (EHS), or related functions.
- Experience within the railroad, transportation, manufacturing, heavy industrial, logistics, or field operations environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety Management, Environmental Health & Safety, Business, or a related discipline.
- Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Safety Management, or a related field preferred.
- Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHST, CIH, or equivalent credentials are highly desirable.
- Experience managing teams and developing safety professionals.
- Experience presenting to executive leadership teams and working directly with regulatory agencies or external auditors.
Travel Requirements
Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50% of the time across North America. Travel may exceed 75% during the first 90-120 days to support onboarding, relationship building, and operational immersion. Regular travel to field locations, repair facilities, and corporate offices is required.
Our Culture

Our values guide how we serve customers, support one another, and make decisions. We seek leaders who model integrity, foster trust, champion safety, and continuously look for opportunities to improve the employee experience and operational performance.
The Opportunity
This is more than a safety leadership role. It is an opportunity to shape the company's safety culture, influence strategic priorities, and help ensure that every employee returns home safely at the end of the day. If you're energized by leadership, operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and creating meaningful impact across an organization, this role offers a unique platform to make a lasting difference.
