About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites:
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a museum system with 12 locations across the state, including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites across the state.  The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. We discover, collect, preserve, interpret, and present artifacts and exhibits that showcase the stories of Indiana's natural and cultural history, art, and science. 
 

Salary Statement: 

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $76,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Handle maintenance on site any of 11 state historic locations including minor repairs and larger projects as assigned by and coordinated with supervisors. May occasionally work at museum in Indianapolis.
  • Manage larger projects including supervising work of contractors.
  • Required to learn and operate all equipment on site.
  • Coordinating with supervisor and site manager regarding daily expectations and work scheduling around public events and visitation hours.
  • Represent the sites professionally in the community as a good steward for the work of the sites and system.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal partners, visitors and community partners
  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment across departments within the 12 site system.

SCHEDULE: This is a Monday – Thursday position, 10 hour work days. Scheduled off Friday-Sunday, but required to carry state phone and be on call at all times for emergency response as needed.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Willingness to learn site histories as they relate to maintenance decision-making.
  • Understanding of historic trades and methods for performing historic preservation work.
  • Understanding of work to be done as needed versus work that requires approval for historic preservation implications.
  • Understanding of operations of other departments as they relate to general ISMHS expectations as well as departmental procedures. 
  • Effective communication skills.  
  • Ability to set work priorities, manage work flow, take initiative and self-start work when supervisor is not present. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, identify problems and brainstorm solutions.
  • Effectively manage contractor and partner relationships
  • Basic computer skills including email and Microsoft word as well as ability to navigate and effectively use online tools necessary for completion of work.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
     
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
