Summary:

At Session Climbing, we believe that a balanced fitness program enhances the climbing experience and promotes a life well-lived. While climbing is our primary focus, our members and guests deserve a holistic fitness experience that fosters strength, mobility, and endurance. As a Fitness Instructor at Session Climbing, you are an integral part of creating this well-rounded experience, engaging with the community and helping to build bridges between our climbing and fitness programs.

Fitness Instructors at Session are enthusiastic participants in the entire community and are knowledgeable about all of Session’s programming. You will lead high-energy fitness classes, supporting the needs of our diverse member base and creating a welcoming, motivating environment for all participants. You are also given the opportunity to create and facilitate fitness workshops, based on the workshop contract Session has drafted. Communication with the Fitness Coordinator, Digital Marketing Manager, and Assistant General Manager are required in order to have their workshops approved and added to the schedule. and private training. You will also contribute to a positive atmosphere by adhering to Session’s rules and etiquette, ensuring a safe and effective workout for everyone involved. Additionally, Session Climbing offers Private Instruction to members and guests, with a split rate of 60% to the instructor and 40% to the facility, with hourly rates determined by the fitness instructor themselves.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: [Note: This is not intended to restrict additional tasks that may be assigned.]

  • Pre-Class Preparation:
    • Arrive at least 15 minutes before each class to welcome students and ensure they checked in for the class you are teaching.
    • Before class, be at the front desk and make sure everyone in attendance has checked in for your class. If they did not, make note of their name and add them after class.
      • Express the importance of this procedure every class.
  • Post-Class Expectations:
    • After class, the fitness instructor will go to the front desk and make sure everyone was checked in and add students that did not.
  • Class Instruction:
  • Maintain at least one permanent class on the weekly schedule with a minimum of 4 participants per class.
  • Lead fitness classes that follow Session’s guidelines and maintain a supportive, inclusive, and professional environment.
  • Provide clear and effective instructions, emphasizing proper form, movement patterns, and breathing techniques to ensure the safety and success of participants.
  • Demonstrate exercises and modifications, offering alternatives for all levels of ability.
  • Maintain a strong and motivating energy throughout the session, fostering a fun and engaging workout experience.
  • Instructor Substitution:
    • Support team continuity by being available to sub for other instructors, helping ensure consistent class coverage and a positive member experience.
  • Participant Engagement:
    • Build connections with participants by greeting them warmly, addressing any questions or concerns, and offering personalized feedback during class.
    • Encourage members to listen to their bodies, adjust exercises as needed, and progress at their own pace.
    • Confidently manage class sizes, turning away participants if the class cap has been reached while maintaining a friendly and professional demeanor.
  • Studio and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Encourage participants to respect Session’s studio rules, keeping the space clean and equipment properly maintained.
  • Take responsibility for post-class clean-up, including organizing equipment, wiping down surfaces, and refilling cleaning supplies as necessary, and vacuuming
  • Troubleshoot any equipment or facility issues and communicate needs to the appropriate staff.
Requirements:

Required Skills and Abilities

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching fitness classes in a gym, studio, or similar environment.
  • Strong knowledge of fitness principles, movement patterns, and human anatomy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to create a welcoming and motivating class environment.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends, based on class schedules.
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships with members, guests, and staff, fostering a supportive and uplifting community.
  • Self-motivated with a desire to participate in the broader Session Climbing community, attending climbing events and other gym programming.
  • Knowledge of climbing and cross-training for climbing is a plus but not required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certified Group Fitness Instructor (ACE, NASM, AFAA, or equivalent) preferred.
  • A current CPR/AED certification is required.
  • In order to teach specific classes, must be certified for that particular modality.

  • Ability to demonstrate and perform a variety of fitness exercises and movements effectively.
  • Physical stamina and endurance to lead classes for a minimum of one hour.
  • Good balance, flexibility, and coordination to guide students through proper form and alignment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively during class sessions.

Vision:

  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
  • Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
  • Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)
