Position Summary

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) provides recovery-focused support to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders by using lived experience to inspire hope, promote self-advocacy, and encourage independence. The CPSS partners with individuals to help them achieve their recovery goals, improve daily functioning, connect to community resources, and maintain stability in the community.

Essential Job Duties

• Provide one-on-one peer support services in community settings and/or the client's home.
• Build trusting, recovery-oriented relationships with individuals receiving services.
• Assist individuals with identifying personal goals and developing recovery plans.
• Teach and reinforce coping skills, problem-solving skills, and healthy decision-making.
• Connect individuals to community resources including housing, employment, transportation, food assistance, healthcare, education, and other supportive services.
• Encourage independence, self-advocacy, and personal responsibility.
• Assist individuals with attending medical, therapy, psychiatric, and other scheduled appointments as appropriate.
• Support individuals with improving daily living skills, communication, organization, and community integration.
• Provide education on wellness, recovery, relapse prevention, and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and Medicaid-compliant documentation, including progress notes and service records.
• Participate in supervision, staff meetings, required trainings, and continuing education.
• Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
• Collaborate with therapists, Qualified Professionals, case managers, psychiatrists, and other treatment team members to coordinate services.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) Certification (Required)
• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid North Carolina Driver's License
• Reliable transportation with current automobile insurance
• Ability to travel throughout assigned service areas
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Basic computer and documentation skills
• Ability to work independently while managing a flexible schedule

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing community-based behavioral health services
• Knowledge of NC Medicaid services and documentation requirements
• Experience working with individuals experiencing serious mental illness, substance use disorders, homelessness, justice involvement, or co-occurring disorders
