Job description

Material Handler I

Performs duties required to prepare hazardous waste materials for incineration in a safe and efficient manner; breaks down and extracts material from various containers and repackages per process plan for feeding into the incinerator.

Assemble boxes and stage all necessary materials for processing and repackaging waste into charge boxes for the incinerator.

Suit up with proper personal protection equipment and other necessary equipment for environmental protection.

Adhere to all site safety policies, including but not limited to cell-phone usage, PPE requirements and life saving rules.

Break down and extract waste materials (including hard solids that may require jackhammer) from various vendor containers and dumps into a mixing pan.

Process materials into various combinations of solids, mixes and/or slurries and repackages into charge boxes per process/plan; weighs all charges to meet, process, plan specifications.

Record all material processed to maintain in-process inventory data using electronic scanning devices.

Shrink-wrap charges; move to incinerator dock for burning.

Consolidate material from drums into roll-off containers for incineration.

Reclaim vendor drums for recycling and crush drums that are not re-usable.

Dump waste hoppers and clean the process area and maintain cleanliness around the department.

Change out air supply banks (provides clean air source for personal protective suits) as required.

Maintain a complete inventory of personal protection equipment and other department supplies.

Communicate with all leadmen and on-coming shift crews as required.

Other duties as assigned.

High School diploma or GED required

Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals and fractions, simple use of formulas, charts, use adjustable measuring instruments where interpretation is required.

Experience with hazardous chemicals, driving fork trucks and using various tools is considered a plus.

Ability to communicate through reading and writing

Trained in the use of material handling equipment

Ability to work around and with hazardous chemicals.

Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.

40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work outside/inside in hot and cold circumstances

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical exam.

Hourly Pay: $24.40, with anticipated increase up to $32.02 upon completion of training. Potential to grow into an incinerator operator role with a pay of $38.19. Pay is determined by the CBA.
