Program Overview

Safe Passages is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the well-being, academic success, and economic self-sufficiency of children, youth, and families. AmeriCorps VISTA members build the long-term capacity of Safe Passages and its partner sites by developing systems, tools, and partnerships that expand access to critical services across Oakland and the Bay Area.

Position Summary

Safe Passages VISTA members serve in various departments, including Food Security, Health & Wellness, Program Development, and Community Engagement, to improve program effectiveness and organization sustainability. Members work on projects such as developing internal systems, supporting with data collection and evaluation, strengthening outreach and communications, expanding volunteer engagement, and research best practices to inform program design. Members serve as part of a team and collaborate with staff and community partners to increase the organization’s ability to meet community needs.

VISTA Positions Available at Safe Passages
  1. Resource Development
    • Support Safe Passages resources development efforts by researching potential fundraising opportunities, grant writing, and supporting other fundraising efforts, including donor communications. 
  2. Famiy Resource Center (FRC)
    • Safe Passages aims to integrate education and social services at school sites in order to make school communities catalysts for social change within the larger neighborhood context.  To this end, the Family Resource School Based VISTA works as part of an integrated team at a school site to support the development of services and partnerships necessary to meet low income families basic needs, and socio-economic mobility. The VISTA will help secure community partnerships, volunteers and resources to increase family engagement in their children’s education. 
  3. Communications/Social Media
    • The VISTA Member will support the expansion of the agency’s communication strategies by developing a social media campaign to promote Safe Passages’ anti-poverty efforts, including Family Resource Centers located in high need schools. The VISTA Member will develop and implement a strategic plan for disseminating program news, information and success stories via social media including websites, Twitter, Facebook and other real time mediums. 
Term of Service

·        Length: VISTA requires a full-time, 12-month commitment

·        Location: Oakland, CA

·        Schedule: Typically Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm; occasional night and weekend events

Benefits

·        Living allowance of $1,320 every two weeks (before taxes and deductions)
