Job description

More Than Another Accounting Job

SBC Bookkeeping & Consulting is building the next stage of our company, and we are looking for an experienced, Columbus, Ohio based client accountant/full charge bookkeeper who wants to help build it with us.

Only applicants in the Columbus, Ohio metro area with experience in a client accounting/bookkeeping firm will be considered.

Since 2020, SBC has supported more than 6,000 small and medium-sized businesses across the country. We believe business owners deserve more than transactions entered into software. They deserve accurate financials, clear explanations, and a trusted relationship with someone who understands their business. You will manage your own client portfolio, serve as a knowledgeable financial partner to business owners, and help strengthen the processes and standards behind our growing bookkeeping operation. This is an opportunity to do meaningful client work while influencing how a relationship-centered bookkeeping company grows.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of small and medium-sized business clients.
  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and explain the results to business owners.
  • Lead new-client onboarding and establish strong working relationships.
  • Complete complex QuickBooks cleanup and catch-up engagements.
  • Build and maintain charts of accounts and class, location, and project-cost tracking.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable activity.
  • Prepare payroll journal entries, without processing payroll.
  • Assist clients with basic cash-flow forecasting and management reporting.
  • Coordinate professionally with clients’ CPAs, fractional CFOs, and other financial partners.
  • Help improve SBC’s workflows, quality standards, technology, and delivery processes.
  • Mentor junior bookkeepers and help assess the quality of their work as the team grows.

SBC does not prepare tax returns, conduct audits, or provide assurance services.

Who You Are

You are an experienced accounting or bookkeeping professional who can take ownership of both the details and the client relationship. You know how to keep a portfolio current, recognize when something does not look right, communicate clearly, and follow a problem through to resolution. You are also interested in improving how work gets done. You do not need every process handed to you, and you are willing to help build better systems as SBC grows.

Required qualifications

  • At least five years of accounting or bookkeeping experience.
  • Experience working for an accounting firm, bookkeeping company, or outsourced accounting provider.
  • Full-charge bookkeeping experience across multiple clients.
  • Experience in complex cleanup/catchup services including financial statement and COA review, diagnosis, and correction.
  • At least an associate degree in accounting or a similar field.
  • Strong QuickBooks Online skills.
  • Experience with accounting practice-management or client-delivery software, such as Double or a comparable platform.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements and explain financial information clearly to business owners.
  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to client service.
  • Central Ohio residency and the ability to attend weekly meetings in Columbus and occasional client-site visits.
  • Authorization to work in the United States and ability to pass a background check.

Strongly preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, finance, or a related field.
  • QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification, or willingness to obtain it after joining SBC.
  • Experience with cash-flow forecasting.
  • Experience mentoring bookkeepers or reviewing their work.

Flexibility and Ownership

This is a full-time, primarily work-from-home position. You will be expected to remain available during regular business hours for client communication, team collaboration, meetings, and occasional client visits. Outside of those commitments, you will have substantial flexibility to manage your own day.We do not measure success by how long someone sits at a desk. We look at the quality and timeliness of the work, client satisfaction and retention, effective portfolio management, professional and technical growth, and contributions to the team.

That flexibility comes with real ownership. Your clients should be well served, your portfolio should remain current, and your teammates should be able to depend on you. This is a full-time “all in” role helping our clients, building our company, and contributing to our culture. Outside employment and maintaining private clients is not allowed.

Salary and Bonuses

The expected base salary range is $65,000 to $75,000, based on experience and demonstrated capabilities. After successfully completing the introductory employment period, you will be eligible to participate in SBC’s performance bonus programs. At SBC, we win together. When the company succeeds, the people helping build it should share in that success. Bonuses are of material value and are in addition to salary.

Grow with Us

This position reports initially to SBC’s President. While it does not currently have direct reports, you will help mentor junior bookkeepers, assess work quality, and strengthen our delivery operation.

As SBC grows, the role will have opportunities to grow with it.If you want to use your accounting experience to help real business owners while contributing your knowledge to help shape a growing company, we would like to meet you.
