Hourly Rate: $38.18 - $44.66
# of positions: 3
Position End Date: August 31, 2026

At the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), we are the shapers. The makers. The originals, driven by a passion for excellence and impact. We are a global leader in applied education, an Alberta Top Employer and a destination workplace for people empowered to make a difference in the lives of students. We offer action-based learning, solution-focused research and enterprising collaborations with partners from around the world.

Academic Services is focused on supporting SAIT's schools and departments in pursuing the institution's strategic priorities. It brings together several academic development, delivery, and quality assurance units with a common goal: student success. Academic Services provides unique, flexible support programming designed to help learners succeed in their chosen SAIT career program.

The English Language Foundations (ELF) program at SAIT provides English as an additional language (EAL) training and instruction to a range of English language learners across Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. This role will deliver English language instruction to students with language proficiency levels for ELF COMN and SPCH classes.

Reporting to the Academic Chair, ELF, you will be a self-starter, have a passion for facilitating applied learning for others and lifelong learning. You will professionally facilitate the students' learning process and support students in achieving established learning outcomes to the maximum of their potential. You will make use of any and all available resources, methods, techniques and strategies to ensure student success. You are expected to work collaboratively with colleagues to create a student-centered learning environment which is pedagogically sound, technically supported and innovative in nature. You must be able to demonstrate excellence in your communication and organizational skills, and you can function in a collaborative team environment. You will hold students accountable for Academic Integrity and will bring forward cases of suspected Academic Dishonesty.

Note: SAIT, as a post-secondary institution, serves a diverse student population. Therefore, instructional duties may occasionally be required during early mornings, evenings, and weekends. If selected, specific scheduling arrangements will be discussed between you and the leader.
The Role
  • Teach COMN or SPCH courses to students of specific Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels.
  • Report progress of learners to the Academic Chair.
  • Participate in curriculum and program development and review.
  • Evaluate student progress and achievement.
  • Provide ongoing support, guidance and advice to learners.
  • Participate in professional development workshops.
  • Facilitate courses, lesson plans, lectures, and learning activities.
  • Adhere to the course outline, including weighting of assessments.
  • Prepare, deliver, and grade all assessments. Adhere to the final grade deadline.
  • Deliver courses through SAIT delivery tools (e.g., Teams, Zoom, Brightspace) is required. Instructors may not change the delivery mode of a course.
  • Comply with the Alberta Human Rights Commission's Duty to Accommodate for all qualified students experiencing learning challenges in post-secondary institutions.
  • Evaluate student progress and facilitate student success, including submitting Early Support forms as needed and responding to email inquiries within two business days.
  • Create an open and inclusive learning environment and show personal interest in student success.
  • Collaborate with faculty colleagues teaching the same course or subject to support consistency across sections, where possible.
  • Provide ongoing support, guidance and advice to learners and potential learners.
  • Promote and support SAIT's strategic and academic plans.
  • Adhere to all of SAIT's policies and procedures.
  • Stay aware of emerging pedagogical issues and educational technologies.
  • Attend program orientations, meetings, and training activities, where possible.
  • Respond to Academic Chair's request for information within two business days.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One or equivalent
  • Master's degree or higher in Teaching English as an Additional Language or Teaching English as a Second Language preferred
  • TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard Three preferred
  • A minimum of three years' experience in teaching English as an additional language
  • Prior teaching experience in EAP and EAL adult learning settings in post-secondary institutions
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Prior CLB assessment experience is an asset
  • Experience teaching newcomers
  • Demonstrated teaching experience using various delivery models including online, Hyflex, hybrid delivery models, face-to-face delivery methods
  • Experience with Brightspace D2L and Zoom
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong aptitude for mentoring and coaching others
  • Previous SAIT teaching experience will be considered an asset
