RDF is seeking a strategic, execution-focused Director of Communications to build and lead a high-impact communications function at the forefront of community development finance and impact investing.

At RDF, capital is more than financing—it is a catalyst for community transformation. This role will translate complex financial transactions and development projects into compelling, human-centered narratives that connect investment with measurable community outcomes, elevate client and partner voices, and establish RDF as a national thought leader in the field.

ABOUT RDF

RDF is a national Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and impact investor dedicated to expanding access to capital in underserved communities. We finance transformative projects in affordable housing, education, healthcare, and small business & entrepreneurship, leveraging public, private, and philanthropic resources to drive economic mobility and long-term community stability.

Our approach is rooted in deep, long-term partnerships, community-informed decision-making, and a commitment to trust, collaboration, and results.

THE RDF DIFFERENCE
  • Flexible, tailored capital solutions
  • Enduring client relationships beyond the transaction
  • Locally grounded, community-informed investments
  • Partnership and collaboration built on trust
  • Measurable impact that creates lasting opportunity
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that positions RDF as a trusted national leader in community development finance and impact investing.
  • Translate complex financial and development work into clear, powerful narratives that connect capital deployment to real human and community outcomes.
  • Lead authentic storytelling that elevates the voices of clients, partners, and communities across digital, media, and executive platforms.
  • Drive media relations and thought leadership initiatives to strengthen visibility and reputation.
  • Provide strategic executive communications support, including messaging, speeches, presentations, and high-visibility opportunities.
  • Build, lead, and scale a high-performing communications team—including staff, vendors, consultants, and agency partners—while managing budgets, workflows, and editorial planning.
  • Partner cross-functionally to support investment, engagement, policy, fundraising, and internal alignment efforts through targeted communications.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • 7+ years of communications experience, ideally in community development, impact investing, finance, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Proven ability to simplify complex financial and technical concepts into accessible, compelling stories for diverse audiences (investors, policymakers, partners, and communities).
  • Strong track record in strategic communications planning, media relations, executive communications, and engagement.
  • Experience building or scaling a communications function, managing teams, budgets, and external partners.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling, and project management skills with the ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative, relationship-oriented leadership style grounded in trust and cross-functional partnership.
Preferred
  • Master’s degree or relevant advanced certification.
  • Direct experience with CDFIs, philanthropy, or economic development.
WHY JOIN RDF

This is a rare opportunity to shape the communications narrative of a growing national CDFI at the intersection of capital deployment and community transformation. You will amplify stories of real impact, help attract the partnerships and resources needed to scale our mission, and play a pivotal leadership role in advancing long-term community stability through innovative, relationship-driven finance.

LOCATION & TRAVEL

Phoenix, AZ (Hybrid) preferred. Travel is required as needed.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Competitive compensation package commensurate with skills and experience. Comprehensive benefits including health, retirement, and professional development support.
