Job description

Company: Poor Richard’s Press
Location: San Luis Obispo, CA
Schedule: Approximately 25 hours per week, with the potential for up to 40 hours during busy periods

Position Summary

Poor Richard’s Press is seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on individual to join our team as a Part-Time Seamstress and Production Assistant.

The primary responsibility of this position is sewing patches onto letterman jackets. This work requires accurate measuring, careful placement and strong attention to detail. The ideal candidate will have professional or personal sewing experience and feel comfortable working with different garment materials, patch styles and sewing equipment.

Approximately 15–20 hours per week will be dedicated to letterman jackets and other sewing projects. The remaining 5–10 hours will involve assisting with apparel decoration, embroidery finishing and general print-production work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Measure, position and sew patches onto letterman jackets
  • Ensure patches are straight, centered, securely attached and placed according to customer instructions
  • Sew leather and embroidered patches onto hats and other garments as needed
  • Inspect completed jackets and garments for sewing quality, placement and accuracy
  • Trim embroidery threads and remove excess backing
  • Perform quality-control checks on embroidered and decorated garments
  • Organize patches, garments and customer orders to prevent mix-ups
  • Maintain a clean and organized sewing and production workspace

Additional Production Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trained backup for applying heat transfers and heat-pressed decals
  • Accurately position transfers on polos, T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and other garments
  • Operate heat presses safely and follow established time, temperature and pressure settings
  • Assist with coiling and assembling books
  • Insert printed materials into envelopes
  • Help with miscellaneous bindery, finishing, sorting, packaging and production tasks
  • Support other departments as production needs change

Qualifications

  • Previous seamstress, tailoring, alterations, upholstery or general sewing experience preferred
  • Ability to confidently operate a sewing machine and work with different garment materials
  • Experience sewing patches onto letterman jackets is highly desirable but not required
  • Strong measuring skills and the ability to position items precisely
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Comfortable performing hands-on, repetitive production work
  • Able to follow written instructions, job tickets and customer specifications
  • Dependable, organized and capable of managing multiple orders
  • Willing to learn heat-pressing, embroidery finishing and print-production processes
  • Comfortable shifting between sewing and other production responsibilities as needed

Schedule

This position will begin at approximately 25 hours per week. The schedule may fluctuate based on letterman-jacket demand and overall production volume. Additional hours, potentially up to full time, may be available during busy periods.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes pride in creating accurate, high-quality work. The right person enjoys working with their hands, notices small details and is comfortable contributing wherever help is needed. Sewing will be the primary focus, but flexibility and a team-oriented attitude are essential to succeeding in this position.
