Switcher Coordinator – 2nd Shift

Location: York, SC
Duration: 1+ year
Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:20 PM
Overtime: Expected

Position Summary

We are seeking a Switcher Coordinator to support safe and efficient movement of trailers, equipment, and materials throughout a manufacturing facility and designated yard locations.

The Switcher Coordinator will operate yard trucks/switcher vehicles equipped with a fifth-wheel connection to perform trailer pickup, movement, staging, and drop-off activities supporting shipping, receiving, production, and warehouse operations.

This position works closely with transportation providers, warehouse personnel, production teams, and logistics staff to ensure timely trailer placement, efficient yard management, and uninterrupted material flow.

Key Responsibilities

Yard & Trailer Management
  • Safely operate switcher/yard trucks equipped with fifth-wheel coupling systems.
  • Connect, relocate, stage, and position trailers throughout the facility and designated yard areas.
  • Perform trailer pickup and drop-off activities supporting shipping, receiving, and production operations.
  • Perform trailer hook-up and disconnect procedures.
  • Inspect fifth-wheel connections, air lines, electrical connections, and trailer securement before movement.
  • Position trailers accurately at loading docks, staging areas, warehouse locations, and production support areas.
  • Maintain an organized and efficient yard environment.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all facility safety policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and promptly report maintenance needs.
  • Report safety concerns, incidents, equipment damage, and operational delays to leadership.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, and efficiency.
Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing and 5S initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve yard operations and trailer utilization.
  • Assist with training team members on yard procedures and safety practices when needed.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • 1–3 years of experience in logistics, transportation, warehouse operations, manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Ability to safely maneuver trailers and equipment in a busy industrial environment.
  • Experience or demonstrated ability to safely operate switcher/yard trucks utilizing a fifth-wheel coupling system.
  • Ability to perform trailer hook-up, inspection, movement, staging, and drop-off procedures.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous manufacturing, warehouse, distribution, or logistics experience.
  • Knowledge of shipping, receiving, transportation, and yard management processes.
  • Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV) certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Experience with SAP or warehouse management systems.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Previous experience as a Yard Hostler, Yard Jockey, Switcher, Yard Driver, Yard Spotter, Trailer Spotter, or similar role is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and reach throughout the shift.
  • Ability to frequently enter and exit vehicles and trailers.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform duties in an active manufacturing and logistics environment.
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing facility, warehouse, and outdoor yard operations.
  • Frequent interaction with production, warehouse, transportation, and logistics teams.
  • Exposure to moving vehicles, trailers, powered industrial equipment, and varying weather conditions.
  • Overtime, weekend work, or flexible scheduling may be required based on operational needs.
